Monuments in Tong, Yorkshire England
« on: Saturday 06 April 13 02:17 BST (UK) »
I need to have someone go to the Tong Parish Cemetery at St. James Church and search for any "monuments" or Tombstones, that are still readable (if only partially) that has the surnames of Booth, Oddy, & Stead written on them.  I have the Parish records showing burials for many of these family members in the 1700's and 1800's.  But other information is missing (such as birth date) and family groups.  I would like to know who might be buried next to who. I would like pictures of the stones as well.

Are there sextant records separate from the Parish records for this Cemetery?

I live in the United States and have searched books and microfilms available here for Monument stones and transcripts - no luck. I cannot make a trip to England to do this research.   :'(

I am willing to pay reasonable fees for results  :)

As a regular visitor to Tong village at present there is the remnants of the recent snow fall there.
Beginning of the week there was about 12-18inches of snow covering the graves.
(I use a nice restaurant there)
So getting there is no problem for me.

Good morning Brian,

If you want a hand to search St James's churchyard I'm willing to assist you. We could also ask Lynnie if she has photographed this churchyard already.

Wouldn't do any harm asking Ian.
Still snow covering gravestones, the horizontal ones.

I'll send Lynn an email re St James. In the meantime Elaine there are 2 photo's of Oddy graves at St Michael and All Angels, Farnley and there are 708 photos taken in Farnley Cemetery, which is a mile or so from St James's.

These photos can be viewed at www.yorkshireindexers.co.uk/gallery

The two Oddy's mentioned are John, Mary and John Holdsworth Oddy.
George and Sarah Lawson, Edward and Benjamin Oddy

Thank-you for all the help offered on the St. James Parish Cemetery in Tong. :)

I will be paying close attention to what you find.
I went to the  http://www.yorkshireindexers.co.uk/gallery/ and need to figure out how to register.
I see there was a Harriett Booth at Tong Cemetery, listed in the pictures at the top.  I have not found a Harriet Booth that belongs to us.  Maybe this was a married name.  The picture was too small to save an image that was readable.  Maybe if I register, I can grab a larger image and search for the two Oddys.  I will try some more and get back to you all.

Samuel Oddy (Blacksmith) and wife Martha Hargreaves were both born and buried in Tong - I have the  parish records - but no graves.  John Booth and Martha Oddy had several children who are also buried in the parish graveyard, but would like to know if there are stones. Some where children.

I registered on the Yorksire website and viewed all of the stones you mentioned no one matches our Booth family as we know it.  I will try to attach a Gedcom file to this that give the Family members as far back as we can find.

Hi Elaine and Brian,

I emailed lynnie and she has replied that photos have been taken in Tong Churchyard and Tong Cemetery but these have not yet been uploaded onto the YI site. Lynn also says she thinks there are a few Oddy's in Pudsey Cemetery also.

As you have given us some specific names and more on your tree, which will take some time to look at, I'll ask Lynn if she has those names.

Elaine: Just had a look at www.calverleyinfo.com
Vital Records Search - Just enter 'surname' of person who you want to locate plus event baptism/marriage or death in the drop down menu.
As an example Betty Oddy (daughter of Richard blacksmith) buried 1745 -12-29. Buried at Tong.
So you see they aren't lost!
