Dover parish records
« on: Saturday 06 April 13 11:29 BST (UK) »
Dover parish records dating 1806 to 1812.  Seeking baptisms of Thomas, Edmund and William LEGGE.  Sons of Jonathan (said to be in the army).  Dover Castle church records start 1813!  Did find a LEGGE family in one of the parish churches - not our family.  On a visit to Canterbury (I live in the NE) I am not sure that I did cover all the parish churches around Dover, and did not look for baptisms other than parish church records.  I would be grateful if someone could do a look-up for me sometime.  Yvonne M.

Are you sure?  I think they may only have Dover St Mary not Dover St James the Apostle.

FindMyPast have the Dover records online as part of the Canterbury collection, I had a quick look but couldn't see them other than the unrelated family you mention.  It may be worth you taking a look at the wider collection.

On the web site www.doverhistory.co.uk you can select the link Dover records on the left hand side. This will give you access to some of the parish records that have been transcribed including baptisms for St James.
Hope it helps

Dover St James is on the IGI and has been since the 1980s at least ;)

The search facility may be confusing, try ............ saint james the apostle, dover

May we ask the source of your information that William had brothers, Thomas and Edmund.  I can clearly see William but can't see anything to link him to these possible brothers.  Also the source of his father's name being Jonathan and that he was an army man?

The Grand Shaft Barracks (Western Heights) actually came under the parish of Hougham.

You are correct, those listed as just Dover (of which there appear quite a lot) are Dover St Mary. ;D

A family story has been passed through the generations that there were three Legge brothers, sons of French parents, who were at a boarding school somewhere in the North of England. The fees stopped coming in and they had to leave the school.  William and Edmund were found in the census’ up to their deaths; born Dover, Kent.  However, a Thomas Legge was born at the same place – Dover, Kent, in 1808, as written in the 1851 Census (thought to be the third brother).  A marriage certificate dated 1840 was found for Thomas Legge (in the army at Leeds) and Catherine Bradbury. Thomas’ father was named as John, a farmer!  We found in marriage certificates that Edmund born 1810, and William (our ancestor born 1812) were the son’s of Jonathan Legge who was in the army but the marriage certificates didn’t state which army.

Thank you, and all who have replied todate.  Will be following up your leads.
