Harry Horner Baptism Lookup Etherly
« on: Tuesday 09 April 13 19:17 BST (UK) »
Ann Maria Williams was born in Co. Durham on 7 December 1882. She married a Henry Clarke Braithwaite on 15 October 1906 but was called Annie Maria. Mr Braithwaite in the 1911 census said he was a widower.

In the 1901 census William Henry (known as Harry) is shown with his wife and young daughter at The Lodge, Bishopgarth. Wakefield. His wife died in Hexham in the first quarter of 1907 and his daughter died in Wakefield district in the second quarter of 1907.

A passenger list shows a William Hy (Henry) Horner coachman, Mrs Horner (no initials) and Hy (Harry) Horner infant sailing to New Zealand on 18 September 1908. I cannot find a marriage for WHH and Annie between his wife’s death and when he emigrated. Neither can I find a birth for Harry who I am told was born on 30 April 1908. It is possible that Annie gave birth in the Etherly area where her mother lived.

Could anyone look at the baptism records for Etherely? I am also posting a similar message on the West Riding site in case she gave birth back at WHH’s home in B|ishopsgath, Wakefield.

I too am rather confused.

Are you saying that the Mrs ? Horner on the passenger list is actually the Anne Maria/Annie who had married Henry Clarke Braithwaite in 1906?

I cannot find a marriage for WHH and Annie between his wife’s death and when he emigrated.

Since you've said that Henry Clarke Braithwaite very much alive in 1911 it's not likely that Henry Horner and Annie did marry; and if they did so it would have been bigamous.

The child was born in Wakefield:

Henry Horner Braithwaite, born 2nd quarter 1908, Wakefield 9c, 42.

I have also posted this on your thread on the Yorkshire Board.

Sorry for the confusion. I had not realised that I had missed out William Henry Horner's surname. Thanks to JenB who has found the birth entry I was looking for. I think that while Ann\Annie was still married to Mr Braithwaite she had a child by WH Horner which has been registered as Henry Horner Braithwaite. WHH, Ann\Annie and the infant then emigrated with the child being called Henry Horner for the rest of his life.

Perhaps no wonder that Mr Braithwaite decided to say he was a widower in the 1911 census as he had been cuckolded.
