Jacob Robins of Cawston, Norfolk
« on: Friday 12 April 13 10:03 BST (UK) »
Hello

My maternal 6th Gt. Grandfather (Jacob Robins) brings up his large family in the Parish of Cawston between the years 1732-51 with he himself being buried in the St. Agnes' churchyard in August 1758.  I know he married a Mary Brettingham in Norwich in July 1730.  My Robins family in Norfolk on the whole seem to have a non-conformist thread running through them - they seem to dip in and out of baptising children either in a chapel or a church!  Though I can find his children baptised and his wife I cannot find Jacob anywhere.  I feel quite certain from the date on his grave that he is born around 1709-10.  He may have connection to a family called Shalders who originate from Worstead, Norfolk and again baptised either in the chapel (at Bradfield) or the church?  I think Jacob  originates maybe from around here or Norwich but I could be wrong?

Jacob died intestate but some of his sons left Wills and they centre around a Mill in Cawston.  They were either bakers or millers... so perhaps Jacob owned the Mill and passed it down to his sons.  I think he was either a baker or a miller too?

Would any 'Norfolk' researcher out there have come across this man?  I did find a Jacob Robins b c1646 (England) but who married a Alice Cusheon (b c1650) on 11 April 1670 in St Mary in the Marsh, Norwich, Norfolk.  However, that is a very 'loose' connection!

Thanks.

It is very possible he was older than you think he was.

Hi

Thank you for your reply and suggestion of birth for Jacob.  Just recently I had a reply from another Roots chatter who was able to answer another query I had posted re Jacob's sister Mary (e.g. who she married).  Through this I was given information about Jacob's father's Will e.g. it mentioned Mary's husband.  My Jacob's father was another Jacob who married in 1699 in Heydon, Norfolk.  This family of Robins had many staunch non-conformists amongst its midsts and, therefore, this has made it difficult to trace baptisms as children do not show up on baptismal records for parish churches.  This is true in the case of my Jacob even though around the time of his birth his father was a blacksmith at Buxton in Norfolk neither Jacob nor his siblings show up on parish records either in Buxton or Heydon.

This branch of the family also has connections with Norwich (Jacob junior married there in 1730) and it is possible that he was born or baptised there?  I have, however, been provided with so much information through my Roots Chat post(s) re Jacob and who his siblings and father were that not finding his baptism isn't such a problem at the moment as I have much to digest!

I have also found out that Jacob senior is very closely related to a Thomas Robins (1653-1726) who was a very wealthy man in the village of Itteringham, Norfolk.  He had built a splendid Manor House built for himself in 1707 (it still stands today) and was Lord of the Manor of over 200 acres at the time of his death.  I think Thomas is probably Jacob senior's uncle but more research needed there!

Once again thank you for your suggestion.

Regards.
