Registry of deeds - information on using them please
« on: Saturday 13 April 13 05:05 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am hoping that someone who has previously used the registry of deeds memorials on microfilm available at LDS might be able to assist me.

I had a memorial number which I then ordered the film from LDS (but I have misplaced the film number). This was listed under a grantor name starting with 'G' and dated 1796. When I have gone to the memorial it makes mention of an earlier deed of lease and release dated 4th and 5th of November 1792.

What film would I order from LDS to view this earlier memorial? I see there is a Grantor Index F-L 1786-1793 on film 100271. Would this be where I can find the memorial?

I also have a reference to a deed regarding the distribution of estate of an ancestor in 1850, even though he died three years earlier. Again his surname begins with 'G', so will I find this deed in the Grantor Index E-G 1850-1859 on film 100320?

I am also interested to hear if anyone has used the scant information given in the index of wills (which only gives name, year, and place) to find matching deeds in the registry. ie. do the years have some correlation.
I am imagining that, if I find an ancestor who I know to have had land in the will index for example in 1716, then there could be a deed in that year or the few after it, pertaining to that persons estate. Is that right or wrong?

Look forward to any replies, Katharine.
