Joseph Cotey and John Nicholson
« on: Wednesday 17 April 13 17:24 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am trying to find some information about two Parkhurst boys from Québec city, Lower Canada: Joseph Cotey (Côté) and John Nicholson. They arrived in Auckland, New Zealand on the St George in 1842. What happened to them after 1842? When and where did they die?

Hi vickylapointe,

Are you sure these two arrived from Canada to NZ as part of the Parkhurst scheme?  The reason I ask is that our Archives state that the boys were from Parkhurst Prison in England and nowhere else.

I can't see any deaths listed for "Cotey", "Cotee" or "Cote" on our BDMH website up to 1962.

In 1963 there is a lone COTE death for a Jane aged 81Y.

What were the birth dates for these boys?

Ok, so they were taken from Canada to Parkhurst, then transported to NZ.

Archives says the following "The St George in 1842 brought 92 boys and another 31 came on the Mandarin in 1843, making a total of 123."  Most of the boys are listed in the "General Biographical Index"  [Bio 1].  So we would at least see the spelling of their names there.

I wonder if BAC3 has seen this information? It should be invaluable for their research.

I'll bring it to their attention.

Poor guys, a very long way from home.
