George, Emily and Lily WIGMORE
« on: Wednesday 24 April 13 12:19 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am trying to find the origins of GEORGE and EMILY ADELAIDE WIGMORE and their daughter, LILY MARY, who emigrated to Australia in Dec 1879 - Native place W. Bristol.

I would love to find their records. On Lily's Australian marriage certificate it states she was born 1879 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England and her father George (b about 1857) occupation as a Miner. On her mother Emily's death record it states she was born about 1856 in St George's Gloucestershire, England. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me find the marriage of George and Emily, presumably about 1878.

cheers Janine

Hi
Think I've found their marriage on the GRO index
George Wigmore married June 1878 Barton Regis  to Emily Evans ref 6a 306.
Barton Regis includes both Bristol and Clifton areas.Unfortunately i think you may have to buy the certificate for £9.25 as I can't find a transcription .
There is a birth for Lily Mary Wigmore at Barton regis June 1879 6a 113.
I see the couple were Wesleyian from the passenger list and the marriage and baptism may have taken place in a Wesleyian chapel.

Thanks so much, Ciderdrinker,

How exciting, this marriage certainly seems a good fit and it's great you found Lily's birth as well, a shame that there are no transcriptions available. Looks like I will have to fork out the cash for the original.

I have now found a family on the 1861 and 1871 census who may be George's. They are at Mangotsfield, Gloucestershire, England. What I would like to know is this place close to Barton Regis? Could this be described as W. Bristol?

cheers Janine

The simple answer is yes it would.
Sorry I didn't come up with  births for George and Emily but there seems more people of that name than you would think.

Where did the Adelaide come from?

There is a family tree with the couple on but has her born Derbyshire and the child as Mabel Annie born 1882  :-\

Possible another couple called Emily Adelaide Evans and George Wigmore I suppose but it does have her death in Australia.

It has her in Derbyshire 1861 and Bethnal Green 1871?  Parents William and Sarah Evans.

Don't think that's right as the family in 1861 aren't in Bethnal Green in 1871.

Hi Milliepede,

Thanks for the reply.  :)

I am slowly piecing it all together.  George, Emily and Lily came to Tasmania, Australia on the "Norfolk", on the ship's passenger list Emily is listed as Emily A. Wigmore and on the inscription on Emily's grave in N.S.W. it gives her name as Emily Adelaide Wigmore (she and George are buried together). George and Emily seem to have left Lily in Tasmania with a foster mother, Mary Brodribb (possibly her Aunt, I have to chase down her maiden name yet)  and gone to N.S.W. to live, George was working as a coal miner and where they probably had more children. On Lily's marriage cert. it states her parents both come from Bristol.  I think that there is a strong possibility that Mabel is Lily's younger sister. I don't know where the person with the family tree got that Emily came from Derby-shire as I can find no mention of a connection to that area anywhere. And in fact there was an inquest into her death and it gives her birth place as St George's, Bristol. So I have a lot more digging to do both here and back in Gloucestershire,

The tree has George born Australia so is a little mixed up.

It does have family for Mabel Annie born Newcastle NSW 1882.  A husband William Theodore Cox born 1879 Adelaide and a son Stanley George Cox 1918-1994 born Newcastle NSW.

Good hunting  :)

Hi Janine,

I have a copy of Mary Brodribbs will, in which she leaves her estate to her neice Lily Mary
Williams, nee Wigmore.  I have followed this family as I wondered why Mary Parker married
James Brodribb so late in life.  Mary is the daughter of Isaac and Ann Parker of Mangotsfield,
Gloucestershire, her sister Emma married George Wigmore 1846.  Have more details if you
want.

Marie

Hello,

I have only just found this post.

Please bear with me, i am trying to establish a connection between James Brodripp and Mary.

I have posted a query here https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=844015.0

Please ignore the above i have just found the baptism for Mary Daughter of Isaac and Ann.

I think the James and Mary in 1851 maybe the same as the couple in Tasmania.
