Please help me find Catherine Coghlan
« on: Wednesday 24 April 13 23:07 BST (UK) »
Hi all, I have hit one of those brick walls everyone is talking about. LOL

I am looking for more info on Catherine Coghlan, born about 1863 in Ireland (all that was available). I know she married Mark Buttle in Chelsea St Luke in England in 1884. The marriage certificate shows her age to be 22 and her father is shown as James Coghlan, deceased, occupation was a cooper. I have looked for her birth info and nothing seems to match up. After her marriage the 1891 Census shows her birthplace as Ireland and the 1901 Census shows birthplace as Hackney, London England. There are three birth records that show a father James Coghlan. One mother is Elizabeth Osborne and birth year was June 1867, the other was Mary Staunton and birth year Sept 1867 and third Mary Bernard with birth year Sept. 1868. All three are Ireland no England birth listing that I can find.
I am not sure of any siblings that I can cross reference to. Would the marriage cert show more info if I order it? I have looked for the death certificate but can't find anything that matches either.  As far as living family they know nothing of her immigrating anywhere and nothing of her visiting Canada to visit her children here.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kim

No - neither of the witnesses were surname Coghlan

Have you checked the 1911 census as full birthplaces were supposed to be shown - not just Ireland

If her age is correct on the death reg - she is just borderline for her birth to have been at the time of the introduction of Civil Registration of BMD's in Ireland - 1864

Unfortunately there are 23 birth registrations for that name between 1864-1865

Thanks for your help Carole. All my other branches have been fairly easy to follow but this had me in a bit of a quandry. What site did you use to find the date of death?? I looked all through ancestry and nothing seemed to fit. I did follow your link for the birth records but the site is being a bit tempermental so I will try a bit later.

Hi

I used freebmd for her death  www.freebmd.org.uk

If you are getting a message "Stack Overflow" when you access the Family Search site - just click out of it - it's a nuisance

Hi

You say "her visiting Canada to visit her children here."

She has Canadian relatives?

Hi Ray,

Yes, most of her children came to live in Canada. My great grandmother was the first one to come. The is a record of Catherine's husband Mark Buttle coming to visit but not until 1927 which is well past her death in 1910.
Are you related to her at all in some way??

Hi Kim

No, not related in any way.
Just trying to elicit hard facts, in order to help.

Regards
Ray
