help with name - Ann Grummord?
« on: Thursday 25 April 13 02:02 BST (UK) »
Please can you take a look at this marriage record. The handwriting is pretty bad, and I think the pen had seen better days too!

It's from the Fleet, May 17th, 1740.
I am interested in the final entry:
17 Charles Butfoy of Bednal green, weaver & Ann GrummorD? of ?? Maybe the D is ditto?

Any other interpretations of Ann's surname would be appreciated.
I have found a christening record, also from St Bride, Fleet Street, 1736 for a James Grumond, son of James and Ann, so wonder if 'my' Ann was widowed, but can't find any evidence of the death of, or marriage of James Grumond.

Many thanks,
Caroline.

I think her surname is Grummet, the 'of Do' refers to 'of Bednal Green' (note that 'of' is written below the line). After that is 'Sp' for Spinster.

I agree with Alexander's interpretation of the text following
Ann's surname, but to my eyes judging by the way the last two
letters of each surname connect, Butfey and Grummot also seem
possible. Familysearch seem to share my indecision, and index
the event every which way, although why they record both 1740
and 1741 as the date is beyond me.

The calendar changed in the mid 1700s so prior to that you often get two years shown.

But the marriage was in May. If it had been between 1 Jan and 25 Mar, two years transcribed might make sense - but not in this case.

Thanks everyone, I'll keep hunting for name variants using your suggestions.
Thanks Freckneale, now you say it, I can see the 'of D', and 'Sp' at the bottom, so that takes care of all the superfluous letters.
Veeblevort, the groom's name is definitely Butfoy (not that it is spelled correctly very often)
Not too bothered about the year of marriage!

It was transcribed as Grummor when I first found it, but seems to be a spelling variation?

Would imagine it's another of those re-interpreted French names....I have a few....that's why Grumord seemed possible.
