job recorded as painter?

i have found a record for someone in my family and their job at the time was a painter
this was in the 1940s im just wondering what sort of painter would this mean

Could be as in painter & decorator; or someone who painted something specific - I came across a ship's painter (all those metal hulls I suppose). Was this the UK & wartime - could make a big difference if so.

yes uk he was from gloucestershire

i thought its either painter or artist but which one i dont know
