1841 and 51 Sussex census pls - LEPPARD
« on: Thursday 09 June 05 11:03 BST (UK) »
Hi

Could sks please have a look in Sussex (possibly Cowfold) for George LEPPARD born in Cowfold in 1842, father William LEPPARD possibly born in Bolney in 1814 - mother Mary thought to have died before 1851.

Also I would be very grateful if you could look in 1841 for William LEPPARD born Bolney in 1814 with wife Mary - thought to have been born in Cowfold in 1816.

Many thanks
Rachel

Hi Deborah

Thanks for your reply - much appreciated

Does the census give any further information about where in Sussex these people were born and whether James (Wood or Ward) was related?

It could be that James was a Wood...and that he is related...and that this is the right household, because William's mother was a Wood.

Many thanks again

Hi Jane

Thanks for the marriage information, every little bit helps of course.

I think what I really need is the 1851 census to prove if George LEPPARD b 1842 in Cowfold is the son of William b. 1814 in Bolney, (son of James and Ann).

Thanks again for your help
Rachel

Hi Rachel,

The 1841 only states whether or not the people were born in the county.  No relationships are given.  Ages over 15 are rounded down to the nearest 5.

PM on its way to you.

Hi again

There are 5 William Leppards in the 1851 census for the Bolney and Cowfold area aged 12, 28(2) 37 and 53 - so the following must be who you are looking for:-

HO107/ 1642/ Folio 339/ Page 13 - Gravelies House, Cowfold

LEPPARD John, Head, Marr, 41, Ag Lab, born Bolney
.............  Mary A, Wife, Marr, 43, born Cuckfield
.............  Caroline, Dau, Unm, 11, scholar, born Ardingly
.............  James, son, Unm, 9, Scholar, born Ardingly
.............  John, Son, Unm, 6, born Cuckfield
............. William, Brother, Wid, 37, Ag Lab, born Bolney

Altogether, there are some 50 odd Leppards in and around Bolney, Cuckfield, etc

Hi Dimps

Deborah

Folio 19, Page 6 (Address looks like "Patches" - someone will correct me)

Sorry, but got to agree with you on this one

James Wood or Ward, 15, FArm Labourer

I would say it was WOOD

Elizabeth Lake or Laker, 15, F.S.

I would say this one is LAKE, with a big flourish of the wrist after writing the 'e'
