What's the best way to trace irish ancestry? Looking for ideas.

Difficult to give much advice without more information- really depends on the period to start with (before or after the start of full civil registration- 1964).
When you do trace family back to Ireland you will need to know their religion and where they lived (townland if not actual parish).
