Moulsham parish registers
« on: Friday 10 May 13 12:42 BST (UK) »
I'm curious about some people living in Moulsham in the 1660s (I found the will on Seax and it might be my family, but I'm not sure). However, the parish registers don't start until the 1830s.

First of all I was wondering if the parish registers had been lost, but then I wondered that, if Moulsham was a hamlet, did the people who lived there have to go to churches in Chelmsford or did they go to the other parishes like Margaretting? Does anyone know? I mean, whilst it's possible they just went to any ol' church they felt like, was there one that was specific to their hamlet?

Or have the registers indeed been lost?

Seems like St Johns Moulsham only began in 1837, thus their records will begin then

Thanks!

The quote at the top of the page is interesting - the "mother church". Which one was it? *shakes internet* - it was "was the culmination of three years' hard work and was received with "more general satisfaction" than any other event in the Parish of Chelmsford." So Chelmsford then? It looks like, from what's on Seax, that only the church that became Chelmsford cathedral (St Mary, St Peter & St Cedd) is old enough. *rolls up sleeves*

Hi,

The nearest church to Moulsham would definitely be St Mary the Virgin, now named the Cathedral, St Mary, St Peter & St Cedd,  The place where the church St John, Moulsham stands would be no more than a 10 minute walk away from the Cathedral, if that.

Regards.
