Russell Gosling - Army Mech.?

I'd like to find out if my great Uncle, Russell Gosling fought during the Second World War. He was born in 1916 in St. Giles, London. He would of been 23 when war broke out. His parents were Albert Gosling and Jessie Biney, formerly Russell.

He was a car mechanic by trade. My grandmother, his sister, tells me that he worked for the M.O.T. My father seems to think that he may of been a mechanic in the army?

Please could someone help me in finding out if he did fight during the Second World War.
