Franklin Military Marriage
« on: Monday 13 May 13 13:21 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to find a link between a marriage and a relative i know who was born on a barracks in Canterbury.

I need some help locating the children of the following marriage.

Thomas Franklin married Sarah Desbois in St Pauls Deptford, Kent on 3rd Dec 1815.

In particular i want to locate Robert Franklin born on St Marys Northgate Barracks Canterbury, Kent 1818 for whom i cant find a birth cert (birth info comes from army discharge papers).

If anyone could help piece these 2 together i would be very grateful.

Thank you

Peter

Hi Peter
You won't locate a birth certificate for someone born in 1818 as they were not introduced until 1837. What you need to look for is a baptism entry. Have you tried family search to see if you can locate home in their records?

i've searched every site i have been able to find and i cant find any entry for Robert.  I know his father is Thomas from his marriage cert of 1852.

I have a search of the parish done and it returned no baptisms!

Sorry i didnt mean birth cert in the original post i meant birth record i suppose!  :)

Hi Peter !   Thomas and Sarah’s children are, as you probably already know :

Thomas Franklin 1821 – 1871
William Franklin 1827 –
Susan Franklin 1829 –
Jane Franklin 1833 – 1900
Joseph Franklin 1835 –
George Franklin 1837 –
Martha Franklin 1839 –
John Franklin 1841 –

Unfortunately, I found no Robert !   ..., Iain.

Thank you so much for finding that info out, do you think i have the wrong marriage, or is it possible that Robert simply wasnt recorded?

Peter, you are obviously holding papers that most people would love to dribble over..., lol !   Especially those researching Thomas b1767.   Perhaps the 3rd (King’s Own) Dragoons or the 4th (Queen’s Own) Dragoons or one of the Royal Cavalry regiments.

Reading your post, you are assuming that Richard is simply a relative, but with the parents and grandparents of Sarah and Thomas..., you have a Thomas / Sarah / Michael / Frances / William / Ann / ..., but there are no siblings or nephews called Richard !

Lol !  I had never imagined that there were “married quarters” during the Napoleonic battles ! (to have Richard born in a military establishment)   So I suppose he was an officer.
(Thomas in the 41 census is down as a carpenter)

Peter..., that's a question you might be better asking the others !

Personally, you have a 5 year "empty" period between the wedding and the first born, with the "first" born being called Thomas. ("confirming" him as being the first)
With the papers you have, you should normally be able to see his enlistment date and you can be certain that “Wellington” had him whisked off to “Waterloo” for a long period of time.   Lol !

If you intend researching the military at the time, a good site is:

Good luck..., Iain.

Iain! that has to be my Thomas as on Roberts marriage cert of 1852 it states his father as being Thomas a carpenter!!!

As for the 5 year period i have traced where the buffs were and they are in Canterbury at the time of Roberts birth.

Thomas joined the army in 1813 as a minor of 17 according to his papers!

I just wonder why i cant find a record of Robert!  He was born in 1818.

interestingly, Robert went on to fight in the crimea and had a daughter Harriet Alma born over there!!

Hi Peter !  To tell you the truth, I feel like I'm getting a little out of my deapth here..., but I'm sure the others will be able to help you in relation to Robert.   Harriet Alma will obviously help them !

If there's anything more you want to know about Thomas's family then please feel free to PM me with the details you require.

Have a nice day..., Iain.
