Hi There,

If I have a License Number for and Irish Pub is it possible to find out, online preferably, how old the pub is, or any other information ?

Thanks

Tara

Not sure you can search for a public house by licence number
 this is the 1923 act
http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1923/en/act/pub/0044/print.html

Publicans would have to apply to the http://www.revenue.ie/en/index.html making a license application  filed with the Circuit Court, with an Intoxicating Liquor Licence granted by the Revenue Commission following approval from the court, so there must be records somewhere.

There is a 'renewed liquor licences' excel spreadsheet which is part of the revenue.ie website, if you search that quote you will find it  on the revenue.ie site

Thanks for that !

It's a tricky one - my friend is trying to find out how long, exactly, a certain pub is in her family.

We thought maybe the licence number might help !!

Hum, back to the drawing board !

Thanks

Tara

Have never tried to trace an Irish pub with licence number but wonder if you'd be better trying to trace it by location, etc.
Not sure of it's location or the period you need but if from Griffith's Valuation to c1930 then the Valuation Revision Books should show changes in ownership.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Aghadowey,

Yes, think we shall have to go down the Valuation Revision Book route !

Thanks

The 1923 Act refers to the Petty Sessions Court / District Court. Have you tried the court records on FindMyPast? You might have to search by the vintner's name rather than pub name.

In going through a local paper before, I came across info about pubs. I can't remember if vintners had to advertise that they were applying for renewal of their licence or whether the content was reports about court proceedings. Either way, the local paper might be worth a look. Or street directories?

Hi Sonas,

Yes I have a Findmypast account but there is no mention of it on that (family name and pub name are the same) - maybe as we are going pre 1901 the system was different then - I'm not 100 % sure to be honest.

I thought there might have been some sort of 'court business' to obtain a licence or something of it's type.....again not really sure !

Thanks For Your Suggestions

Tara

Hi Tara, I was just doing a bit of general research and not paying a lot of attention to pubs. From memory though (I could be totally wrong!), I don't think the procedure in the 19th century was a lot different to today. I just had a quick search on the British Newspaper Archive site looking at the Cork Examiner and there are hits for renewal of publicans licence. I don't have an account so can't go any further. If you haven't used that site before, you get free views of three or so pages so it would give you an idea of procedure if you had a look.

You are spot on Sonas  :o yes of course the newspapers, part of the process is 'advertising the intent to obtain a license' as you have to be 'of good character' and make it public so  any 'interested parties' can object to a licence being granted
