Leonard James Dean
« on: Tuesday 14 May 13 21:38 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am helping a friend to do some research into Leonard James DEAN
Leonard was born on 17 October 1911 at Stone, Staffordshire to Charles Dean and Mary Ann Chilton
The family can be found on 1911 census at Abbey Street in Stone.
Mary Ann (mother) died in 1914.
In April 1926 Leonard (aged 14) and his brother Percy William DEAN (aged 15) can be found on the passenger list of the ‘Ausonia’ sailing to Quebec, Canada.  They are sailing with quite a number of other young men from different parts of the country.  Their address is given as Box Cottage, Hanchurch, Nr Newcastle, Staffs.
Does anyone know if Box Cottage was a house or some sort of institution?
I wondered if the boys were being sent to Canada on some sort of scheme.
Percy settled in Canada, married and had a family, but it is thought that Leonard returned to England.   However, I can’t find any evidence that he did.  Any help or ideas would be much appreciated

I've had a look on the Canadian Home children archive of child emigrants from the UK to Canada. i can't see your deands on this sight, so they could have been part of another scheme

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/home-children/index-e.html

There's is a group of yuong persons listed on the Ausonia in 1926 - but in march. Organised by the church army and off to Winnipeg

Thanks very much for your quick reply. I typed the names into the database of some of the other boys on the same passenger list as Leonard and Percy but they didn't come up either, so maybe it was another scheme. Interesting information about the boys from the Church Army.

Dear Glen
Thanks for that suggestion. I will definitely post it on the Canada page. I don't know why I didn't think of that!
