Thomas Balcomb, 1799-1874*, West Dean, Sussex
« on: Wednesday 15 May 13 05:14 BST (UK) »
One of many troublesome, dead ends on my family tree has been my 3rd great-grandfathter Thomas Balcomb, baptized 7 April 1799 in West Dean, Sussex, and possibly died 13 Sept 1874. His wife's name was Amelia, last name unknown? My 2nd great-grandmother Ann Alice Balcomb, baptized 15 Aug 1830 in Brighton, was among their apparent six children. But Thomas Balcomb's wife and his parents (John and Ann) remain mysteries. Any help greatly appreciated.

It would appear that Amelia's last name is Palmer. She was baptized 31st March 1805. She married Thomas in 1826. Her parents are Thomas Palmer & Martha Jackson. Thomas's father Thomas Balcomb was born about 1765 and died 1 November 1840 Chicester, Sussex. There is an will index for Thomas that gives his date of death as 13 Sept 1874.

Hope this helps

Thomas's mother Ann appears to have a surname of Tendall

--Thanks for your help. Your hints sound almost exactly like what I've "calculated" on ancestry.com, except for Ann Tendall. I came across that possibility, also an Ann Tickner, but neither seemed to fit or "feel" like a match, mainly because of geographic distance, if I remember right. So I'm still doubtful about Thomas' mother.
--For Thomas' father, JOHN, I had completely guessed at the year 1765 -- which oddly you also listed(?) -- but I have nothing to back that up with, no date, no place, just a guess-timate.
--I also found Amelia Palmer, baptized 1805 at St. Pancras, Middlesex -- but in later census records she listed her birthplace as Limehouse, which is 5.3 miles from St. Pancras, hence I was skeptical, and those censuses point to DOB in 1800, but maybe she wasn't baptized till years later??
--I had also completely guessed that Amelia and Thomas were wed in 1826, but have no proof of when or where... just a guess.
So, I truly appreciate your answers, but they seem to leave me with basically the same questions.

Thanks Omega!
It's way past time for me to get to bed, so I'll check this out more tomorrow -- but your tips sound fresh and exciting! Geography always figures into my logic and your hints seem far more plausible on first sight.
On Amelia Marshall, any idea if she was born near Limehouse, Middlesex? Hopefully, more will be revealed tomorrow. Happy hunting and thanks!
