Cause of Death on certificate.
« on: Friday 17 May 13 09:15 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have a family member who has his cause of death shown on the death certificate as:-
1/ Acute Lobar Pneumonia
2/ Syncope

Syncope is the part I cannot get to grips with, I always thought that this was the term for "Fainting"
does anyone have an explanation please.
Regards always
Frank.

Exactly that, fainting or loss of consciousness.

Hi Mike, Thanks for that, so can I assume that he just slipped into a coma and never regained consciousness?

Yes I thought it was fainting....you learn something new everyday :o

"Syncope is defined as a transient, self-limited loss of consciousness with an inability to maintain postural tone that is followed by spontaneous recovery. This definition excludes seizures, coma, shock, or other states of altered consciousness. Although most causes of syncope are benign, this symptom presages a life-threatening event in a small subset of patients. "

Hi, Glad its answered some questions for you all, he was a Railway fireman in Goole in Yorkshire and died in 1924 at a relatively young age, it makes me wonder how he contracted Pneumonia, it was the belief that he died following an accident ( Family belief), perhaps the pneumonia  was suffered due to the after effects of one.
Regards always

That would make sense Frank if he was laid up after the accident.

Hi Carol, yes that was my thoughts, I'll have to have a dig around to see if I can find anything regarding an accident.
