Declared insane?
« on: Sunday 19 May 13 00:37 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Can someone tell me what term was used for the process of having someone declared insane and locked away in a mental institution? Just lost for words.

Several, Declared was one of course, sectioned is another, committed yet another, and certified.

None all that good.

Thanks, I think committed was the word I was after. Just having a senior moment and losing my words, again.

What period, mum mum?
what state - terminology sometimes differs between states in Australia

And do you mean permanently, or temporarily?   There is something like a 96-hour order, where they can be detained under the Mental Health Act for 96 hours (4 days) when only temporary restraint is needed, or to give the authorities time to work out whether they need treatment or not, etc.

As it is an illness, normally it comes under scrutiny between the medical profession and the legal profession. A person is then declared mentally incompetent to look after themselves or others that they may have care of.

Less easy now than in early days, when someone may just have been of low intelligence and therefore incompetent.

Was thinking historically, late 1800's early 1900's, when a wife could be declared insane for excessive grief over the loss of a child or children and was locked away never to be seen again. Just couldn't think of the word that was used.
Changes to DSM mean that grief may be diagnosed as depression, however these days you are more likely to be prescribed anti depressants rather than locked away.
