Hall, Mecklin, Leith.....
« on: Monday 20 May 13 10:09 BST (UK) »
I have found an unattributed reference to an Alexander Hall b 1686 in "Mecklin of Leith",  Armagh.
According to this reference  Alexander had a son named Alexander Hall who was born in 1711 in the same place. This Alexander had a son also named Alexander Hall who was baptised in Lurgan, Armagh on 23 September 1763. He was married to Sarah Smythe, daughter of William Smythe of Grove Hill Co Down.

I havent heard of Mecklin of Leith, and these dates seem to be going back quite far - could anyone suggest whether there might be a kernel of truth in any of it?

Much appreciated, as always. :)

Where did you find the information? "Mecklin of Leith" sounds like it could be a place in Scotland rather than Armagh  ???
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

It was passed on by a friend of a friend many years ago.
I originally dismissed it,  but have just found it again and thought it was worth a shot on rootschat, although I share your doubts.  Does Leth-Mecklin ring any bells?
Any ideas welcome,
Thanks,

Another reference-ISAAC HALL Emigrated from the Parish of Leth-Macklin, County Armaugh, Northern Ireland, arriving first in Pennsylvania in 1763.

Certainly can't find a civil parish close to that in Armagh.

Really clutching at straws here and relying on mispronunciation... Legmoylin townland in the parish of Creggan?

Another possibility (going down the mispronunciation road) is Latmacollum townland  in the parish of Lisnadill, County Armagh.  There is mention of Alex and John Hall, Latmacollum 1783  (memo. marriage settlement) on this website :  http://books.google.ie/books?id=HUqRznvpxsMC&pg=RA1-PA306&lpg=RA1-PA306&dq=Hall,+Latmacollum&source=bl&ots=u2005lAAc8&sig=3xUILj-fyj3N75bSr65p7yryFzY&hl=en&sa=X&ei=jzSaUc7XGoqQ7AbS14HIBA&ved=0CFIQ6AEwBg#v=onepage&q=Hall%2C%20Latmacollum&f=false
