Hamilton Money - Who's his Father? Ayrshire, Scotland - 1805 -/+ 2
« on: Wednesday 22 May 13 14:25 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I started looking at family history yesterday, and I've made it to this gentleman.

I know this isn't within the time as guided. But I'm really stuck for his dad. Would I be hitting the nail on the head when I say I can't find information on this, and won't be able too?

He was due to be married to a woman named Charlotte Drossier, but his "father" stopped him at the third banns due to him being under 21, I believe he was 20 at the time. They later went onto be married for atleast 16 years. Unfortunately, his father isn't named on the banns. (You can get this result by searching Hamilton Money Banns on Google)

I've looked at an 1881 census up to the point of him being 76, widowed and none of his children were living with him in norfolk, I'm guessing upto his death in 1887. He was a lodger with the family surname of Child, head of the house was called Henry. He was a baker and a beerhouse keeper.

As I go further back, the last census with him on is 1841 when he's 35, but I've seen 3 records, and his DOB changes. It's always from what I've seen, 1803 - 1806.

Do free Ayrshire census' exist?

Also what are Trinity House Calendars - (1787 - 1854)?

If this isn't relevant I do apologize

Kind Regards,

Darryl

Welcome to rootschat Darryl.

I found this:
http://www.doun.org/transcriptions/surnames.php?doc_type=200&surname=MONEY
which mentions the banns being read in Coltishall, Aylsham District, Norfolk. What leads you to search for his father in Ayrshire Scotland?

His year of birth being estimated between 1803 to 1806 in the censuses is nothing out of the ordinary. On the census, where does it say Hamilton was born?

Hi Ruskie,

I'm just tracing the family tree back on my Grandad's side, and this is as far as I've got.

I've seen 3 Census, One says Scotland, another Ayrshire, Scotland... the Latter was Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.

Either way, I'd hazard a guess he's from Scotland.. ha!

The link you posted, I'd originally seen that too, was just intrigued as to who his father was as it may help me go even further back.

Typically, What's the average someone manages to go back?

Hi again Darryl,
I just checked the 1851 census and see that Hamilton was born in Ayrshire. I had a look on Scotland's People but couldn't see a baptism for him. I'm sure someone should be able to find him for you though. I notice that he names one of his sons John with the middle name of Hamilton. I wonder if Hamilton may be his middle name which he prefers to use as a first name? It may be one reason I can't see an obvious baptism - but of course there could be other reasons.

Regarding how far people are able to trace their family history, it varies so much. Generally it gets more difficult prior to the census (ie prior to 1841) but it depends on area of the country, how the records were kept, whether the family stayed in one small village or moved about, how rare or common the names ... many things. Some people have problems getting further back than grandparents, others go back to the 1600's and earlier. If your family was wealthy they may have left more of a paper trail so may be more likely to be traceable the futher back you go.

Familysearch has this:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/MQS3-TY1
I think it is a submitted record (so may not be reliable) as there is not an exact date of birth given and the place of birth is Kilmarnack, Scotland, Eng ( :P). Parents said to be John (chr 1773 in Coltishall) and Janet (no place of birth given).

The highest distribution of the surname Money is around Norfolk but there are also some around Ayrshire.

Hopefully someone will be able to find Hamilton's birth or baptism in Scotland. But if Familysearch is correct, you might have to go back to Norfolk to continue your Money search. I wonder if Janet is Scottish as it is often a Scottish forename. Hamilton is said to have a brother Archibald b Glasgow 1808. Very Scottish.  ;)

There are a lot of "Moneys" in Norfolk including a John chr in 1773 Coltishall. I think we need to confirm the info from Familysearch before determining which might be your Moneys. You can have a look for yourself on FreeREG:
http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl
(I usually just enter the county, in this case Norfolk)

Ah that's great thanks. I wonder why he would have moved to Scotland then. John seems likely... As it's a very common first name in our family too. Theres atleast 4-5. Not including my middle name.

Hamilton could be a middle name, who knows.

I know we have buildings named after our ancestors. Theres still 3 buildings in west cornforth which are called money's buildings.. but that's all we know of that

It's all very interesting. As I say, I only started the family tree last night and I'm in the 1700s.

Found abit more information on John (Census 1841), he was born 1771, and he died in 1845. with wife jane (She was the scottish link)

Found this - What you think? Does this mean John's dad was called John too?

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Baptisms&RecordID=11792

Also,

http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Burials&RecordID=2688267

mention of infant make it unlikely I'd imagine - Does this mean this John Money died an infant? I'm not sure how to interpret these records.

Potential Elizibeth death - http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Burials&RecordID=1849447

Again, I'm not sure.

 Hi Darryl,
The name Hamilton is a very common surname in Ayrshire especially in the Kilmarnock Area.
It's possible that the forename Hamilton was your ancestor's middle name and he was called after his mother's father. Scottish tradition has the first son called after the father's father and second son named after mother's father. Works in reverse for girls - first daughter mum's mum etc. Of course there are always exceptions to that rule  ;D

Looking at the name Money on the 1841 Census in Ayrshire (try www.freecen.org.uk) you can see that there a few Money people in Ayrshire including some in Kilmarnock itself. Some of the older Money folk have been born in Ireland. Some of these people have been born in the 1780's and have obviously come to Scotland married and had families.
The name has also been spelled or mistranscribed as Mooney ???

Could your Mr Money have been related to them?
What was Hamilton's occupation in the earlier Censuses?

Looby
