Christopher Charles DOAK - information needed pls
« on: Sunday 26 May 13 12:46 BST (UK) »
I am seeking information on Christopher Charles DOAK.  He went to the Boer War in 1901 as a private in the 5th West Australian Mounted Infantry. He gave his age as 20 years, and his birthplace as Gisborne, New Zealand.

He then fought in the South African Veterinary Corps in the fist world war, and died in 1916. His age at that time was given as 42!

His brother Joseph Denver Doak also fought in WW1 as Lieut Joseph Denver IRVINE. He died in 1917.  Joseph was 28 when he enlisted, and his birthplace was Auckland, New Zealand.

Their mother's name was Margaret.  Their stepfather was George Irvine, and according to a death notice, they were Margarets only 2 sons (although there may have been daughters, or sons who had died in infancy/childhood).

I have found the arrival in Victoria of Master Doak, 14, and Master Doak, 16, with Mrs Doak, in 1898 from Dunedin, and this could well be them.  But I cannot find their births at all.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance   :)

Have you seen the military records?  Is anything recorded there?

Do you have George IRVINE's marriage certificate?  Does it give a maiden name for Margaret?

ghostgirl, this is a long shot or perhaps a rabbit hole, but there is an arrival of a Mr Doak to Dunedin in 1894 (just prior to that passage from NZ to Vic, AU that you found).    He embarked from Sydney; and is noted as British.

Also note that DOAK looks to have been spelled a variety of ways - DOAK, DOAKE & DOKE.

Thank you Twiggy.  The only thing I have been able to glean from the military records is that his mother was margaret Irvine!

I have the marriage of Margaret Doak to John Menhenott in 1899, then the marriage of margaret Menhenott to George Irvine in 1915. That's as close as I can get for a Doak-Irvine marriage!!!

Good point though - I will check out the other spellings again.

The first one was in 1899 in Mt Margaret WA, the second one (to george Irvine) in 1915 in perth.  I have also noted that in 1896 there was a death of a James DOAK, who was born in Oamaru NZ. I thought this may have been Margarets 1st husband, father of Christopher and Joseph - but he was only 23, so more likely to be a brother. It also doesn't fit with the arrivals of the Doaks in Victoria in 1898...

Have you looked for the births of Christopher and Joseph in Australia instead?
