Arrival Durban 1958 then where?
« on: Tuesday 28 May 13 20:27 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace what happened to two family members (man and wife, believed deceased) who travelled to Durban from Southampton on the Athlone Castle in February 1958.

Does anyone know if there are any accessible records relating to immigrant arrivals in South Africa at that time?

No mention of both members in the NAAIRS database which could mean they are still alive or returned to the UK.

This is going to be very helpful.  Their occupations in the UK were, sales rep and she was an office worker.  She had studied art but did not continue with that career.

An old family rumour was they had something to do with an orange farm near Jo'burg
but the 'orange' part may have been the name of a place.

I have sent the email to SA as you suggested.

On the main highway from Johannesburg to Vereeniging there is an area known as Orange Farm. The largest industry in Vereeniging at that time was Dorbyl [Dorman Long at that time]but there was also United Steel, Massey Ferguson and the building of railway locomotives and carriages.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Thank you for the information.  I had found Orange Farm but believed it to be a Township and therefore dismissed it.  I didn't realise that the major companies were there.  This is indeed promising and seems more plausible than my relatives working/owning an orange farm.

I wonder if a death could be confirmed in South Africa? It is of Joyce Padfield (the name of her common law husband Idris Sydney Padfield. She may also have been known by her  married name of Lewis or her maiden name of Barker. She was born in Chesterfield in 1917.  She and Idris went to South Africa after 1961 ( I don't think there are passenger lists after 1960) to join her daughter and I know that Idris returned to the UK after Joyce's death.  He died in 2004.
