1841 Census - PORTER
« on: Saturday 01 June 13 21:03 BST (UK) »
I am struggling to find a John PORTER of indeterminate age in or around the Keswick, Cumberland area.

I have details of him marrying a Mary DIXON (born 12 Feb.1786 Crosthwaite) in 1804 in the parish of Crosthwaite, they had some children:

John PORTER (1816/7)
Sarah PORTER? (1810)
Jane Porter (1806)
Ann Porter (1808)
Dinah PORTER (?)

The following three of this family unit turn up in Hutton Soil (near Penrith) in the 1841 census, but with no John PORTER Senior.

Mary (1786)
John (1816/7)
Dinah (1816/7)

On John PORTER Junior's marriage certificate in 1841, John Snr's occupation is given as Jailer or Tailor - the handwriting is fairly illegible and so it could read as either.   In Jollie's Principal Inhabitants of Cumberland, 1811 there is a John PORTER, tailor listed and so presumably we can assume that he is the latter.  i.e. a tailor?

I don't know John PORTER's birth year, but can only assume he'd be of a similar generation to his wife (though there are no guarantees on this of course).

And so, I was wondering if a John PORTER who might match some of the above details turns up in Keswick perhaps?  Would someone kindly be able to do a look up for me?

Thanks

Hello and thanks rosie99.  This burial is interesting.  I hadn't found this one before.  Will have to make a note for when I next visit Keswick to go seek it out in St Kentigern's.  This John Porter has been frustrating me for many years.  Especially since he is on the church entry for his marriage to Mary as being 'John Porter of Liverpool'.  Trying to find a John in Liverpool is like a needle in a haystack!
