William Gunn, Sergt 3rd Field Ambulance, Australia Imperial Force, killed in action 24th Nov 1915 at Anzac, Gallipoli.   http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/606061/GUNN,%20WILLIAM

Trying to find a link to my family and why his death features on a gravestone in Tomnahurich cemetery Inverness, can anyone help identify William at the Australian end?

QLD death index. No parents noted on the index.

1922/F3535   William   Gunn

1922 is the year his death was registered. DOD is 24 Nov 1915 as noted in your post.

On WW1 record, NOK is Mrs D GUNN, 42 Rose St Inverness.

This person is alive at Dec 1921 (receipt of his medals)

William GUNN, Army No. 9 (NINE) was born in Inverness. At enlistment in Brisbane on 22 August 1914, he gave his age as 30 Years 9 Months. His NOK is recorded as Mrs David GUNN, 42 Rose Street, Inverness, Scotland. He stated he had previously completed 8 years service in RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps) followed by 4 years service RAMC Reserve.

On 7 September 1914, he was assigned to "A" Section, 3rd Field Ambulance and immediately promoted to the rank of Sergeant (MOST probably due to his previous Service and experience in the British Army).

Of SPECIAL interest is a M-I-D (Mention In Dispatches) reference to which I shall transcribe exactly from his Army record:
QUOTE
Special Mention In Dispatches M.O. 44/1916
Special Mention In Dispatches for conspicuous gallantry between 25April to 5 May 1915. M.O. 570/7 of 1915.
UNQUOTE

An extract of this M-I-D was promulgated in the "London Gazette", 5 November 1915, Supplement Nr. 29354 should you wish to read or copy it.

He was awarded "1914/15 Star", "British War Medal" and the "Victory Medal". His Memorial Scroll and Plaque were issued in England (sic), probably to his noted NOK, Mrs David GUNN; MOST probably his mother.

Hopefully this information fills a few gaps for you in the life of a brave soldier.

Wow you guys really have done some work here thank you all so very much for all that wonderful data.   ;D

I'm not sure who William was, he was unknown to me until yesterday.  Mrs David Gunn (Ann) his NOK was most likely his grandmother, he is named on their gravestone listed above.  I don't have a son William to the couple and anyway Ann would probably be too old (bn 1835) to be his mother.  There is an illegitimate birth April 1881 in Inverness (no father listed) to a Jessie Gunn (who I believe may be Ann's daughter Jessie who was unmarried , age 22 at census 1881) Jessie married in 1884 but died @ Kinlochleven in 1919 before William's death was registered.

@ Rosball that isn't me on the other forum (but that is me on the Scottish thread on here) will check out the other forum - thanks!

Now back to check him out on 1891/1901 Scotland census.   ;D
