CHICK family of GREENWICH, KENT
« on: Saturday 11 June 05 01:36 BST (UK) »
~~~~~~~~
JOHN & ANN CHICK were buried in Greenwich,in 1838 & 1831 respectively, and from their ages at death, both appeared to have been born about 1749/1750, but I know not where!
I do not know any details about their marriage either, but presume it to have been in the early 1770's as their first child was born in 1775 and another eight children followed regularly over the next 20 years.
JOHN CHICK baptised Greenwich on 7th Jan 1775
WILLIAM CHICK " " on 8th Oct 1776
MARY ANN CHICK " " " on 4th Nov 1778
SARAH CHICK " " " on 16th Jan 1781
JAMES CHICK " " " on 11th Jun 1783
THOMAS CHICK " " " on 2md Oct 1785
ELEANOR CHICK " " " on 11th Jan 1788
CHARLOTTE CHICK " " " on 26th Mar 1790
SAMUEL CHICK " " " on 9th Sep 1793
My 4 x gr.grandmother MARY ANN CHICK (above, born 1778) married Commander JAMES ATWATER of the Royal Navy.
If anyone has any knowledge of this family I would love to hear from them, and I would be more than happy to share all my known knowledge.
Kind regards, Diana
Hi Diana.
Try 1757 Dorset on the IGI. I have a Chick from that general area who ended up living in London.
Hi Bob,
Yes, I am aware that Chick is orginally from that part of the country, but with the name John Chick being so common I have no idea how to prove whether mine is from there or not.  I need something to place  'my' Chicks in that part of the country before I can start looking there, and it is all before Census records that give place of birth, so it would have to be something like a Will or some other legal document.  However, I thank you most sincerely for your interest
Cheers, Diana
Greetings William,
Oh! I am green with envy!  Fancy having a book and telescope which once belonged to our mutual ancestor  Commander James Atwater!  How wonderful!
Commander James was my 4 x gr grandfather too, and my lineage is through his son James John Atwater: grand-daughter Charlotte Atwater: gr grand-daughter Charlotte Louisa Atwater - this lady being an illegitimate daughter of Charlotte.
I am wondering if your descendency is through Commander James daughter Sarah Ann Atwater and her husband John Shipley, who came to Australia to live in 1857, or perhaps like myself, your direct line came in more recent times.
I would love to communicate with you direct but Rootschat in their wisdom have blocked your email address for security reasons.  It seems that we have to post three messages on the main boards before we can make contact through their personal message system  I hope we can do this as I would love it if you could perhaps send me a photograph of the book and pocket telescope but would rather do so in a direct communication rather than through Rootschat.  I look forward to hearing from you again, Cheers Diana in Tropical Far North Qld.
ok i found the note from my grandmother and it says:
Sarah Anne Atwater   B 13/3/1837
daughter of James Atwater & Sarah Ann Chick
She married John James Shipley and came to Australia to join him.
John James Shipley was the grandson of James Milson who Milson's Point Sydney is named after.
They lived in a house on the waters edge at Careening Cove North Shore.
they had a daughter Sarah Ann Shipley born in that house.
She married Arthur Fleming and their daughter Elsie Fleming married Arthur Stephenson.
(Our family has a tendancy to name their daughter exactly after the mother?)
Their daughter Elsie Fleming Stephenson married Charles Edward Grigg
and my mother  Rhonda Elsie Grigg married Werner Hahn
and thus im the youngest of their three boys. (well 40 actually but thats still young i think.)
and i have three of my own.
so thats a brief outline from Sarah Ann Chick down to me.
Hi Will (Is it okay for me to call you that?)
Have just received both of your messages having had no power since a few minutes after posting off my message to you about 7am.  Now, unfortunately, I have to take my daughter in law (a non driver) shopping so cannot get into anything in depth at the moment.  As soon as I get home I will get together some stuff that I have which may be of interest to you, including a copy of the marriage of James Atwater to Mary Ann Chick and a Naval report on James life in the Royal Navy.  I also have a theory on the parentage of James which seems to be the major brick wall of most of the Atwater researchers (and there are quite a few of us).  I have a contact address for another direct descendent of Sarah Ann Atwater and John Shipley who lives in Brisbane, but she is a dreadful correspondent.  Do you have much else on the Atwater family or basically only the information left to you by your grandmother?
Must away as I am being called to go do my taxi driving duties!!!!   Speak again soon, Kind regards, Diana
