Not in Wiltshire

At the top of this board there is a list of place names the following are not in Wiltshire the correct county is in brackets:

Andover (Hampshire), Cirencester (Gloucestershire), Dursley (Gloucestershire), Faringdon (Oxfordshire), Fordingbridge (Hampshire), Hungerford (Berkshire), New Forest (Hampshire), Romsey (Hampshire), Stockbridge (Hampshire), Tetbury (Gloucestershire) and Wokingham (Berkshire)

Missed off the list are Bulford, Durrington, Ludgershall and Tidworth which used to be split between Hampshire and Wiltshire but since 1974 has been entirely in Wiltshire.

If you check the Registration Districts from 1837 onwards, some or all of these were partially in Wiltshire until the late 19th/early 20th centuries.

Because of changing county boundaries, it will never "always be right", but as we are searching mostly in the 19 century and earlier, RootsChat has adopted the following custom, which can be seen clearly in the board title:

England (Counties as in 1851-1901)

We still won't have everything right, but it's a good compromise :)

Thank you for all your replies I was going to query Wokingham but have checked part of it used to be a detached part of Wiltshire up until 1844.
