Wolverhampton Ropemakers records of employees
« on: Wednesday 12 June 13 21:27 BST (UK) »
Hi, does anyone know if it's possible to find records of employees.  Patrick Loftus (Irish) was a Ropespinner in 1851.  He lived in Caribee Island.  At that time there were 2 ropemakers.  Edward Griffin of Snow Hill and Moses Ironmonger of Darlington Street.  Were records kept of employees and if so where should I start searching for these?

Many thanks

Val

Hi Glen, I dip into the Wolverhampton Archives online now and then and have found some superb information on there about the area and the lives of the Irish.  I'm having trouble finding out where in Ireland my ancestor (Patrick Loftus) came from.  I'll try giving them a ring to see if they can help with ropeworks employee records - a long shot perhaps but worth a try.  Any other thoughts do let me know!!

Thanks for your help.
Val

Hello Val,
Archives closed on Mondays,i will have a look On Tuesday(I "help" out,!!!).However, have you tried
blackcountryhistory.org?I typed in Caribee island and a photo came up.then i typed in Ironmongers Ropeworks, and a photo came up of the building..You can order the photos, they will send e-mail,you have to pay though. So then ,i came off that site and typed it in google,a reference came up to 2 ropeworks in w-ton on the black country bugle site. They are Moses Ironmonger,Darlington Street, and Edwin griffin,of Snow Hill.Do you know a year ,because some people have transcribed the censuses by names,so i could look him up for you. Also try the LostWolverhampton site and post on the forum.Glen

Hi Glen

wow!, I have the 1851 census but not been able to find Patrick in 1841 or 61 so if you have that information I would be really grateful for copies or ancestry detail!  Thanks so much!  Val

Hi val.
I have had another look today,no mention on 1841.In 1861,there is a Patrick Loftus living in Stafford Street,Wolverhampton, aged 36,his wife is Mary,32 ,son Michael 13.St.Peters Ward,Caribee island was St.Marys ward. They were close to each other though.I managed to print 1851 census off,if you havent got it.Glen
