Samuel Sheffield was a shoemaker, who died Ampthill 1861. Married to Sophia Sheffield who died Ampthill 1862. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

He seems to have had a problem knowing where he was born. There's no Tebworth in Hunts, although there is a Tetworth, but there is a Tebworth in Beds. a hamlet of Chalgrave. In 1841 he says he was born in Beds, in 1851 it was Tebworth Hunts. and in 1861 Emberton Beds. The only Emberton I can find is in Bucks. And none of these places are particularly close to Ampthill.

And to cap it all I can't find his marriage. OK, time for a serious look!

I'd just come to the same conclusion JJ, particularly as in 1841 there's no obvious wife, after Samuel the next entry is Sarah 30 who looks to be a daughter. Might also explain why I can't find any children of Samuel and Sophia

There are baptisms available on Family Search for -

Sarah b. 1809 baptism 25 Mar 1812, Martha 31 Oct 1823, Elizabeth b 16 Dec 1816, baptism 16 Jul 1817.

Parents name Samuel & Elizabeth Sheffield.

It looks as though they might be Samuel Sheffield and Elizabeth Barns who married at Maulden, where the children's details were recorded, on 9 Dec 1807. The transcript shows that Samuel was of the parish of Campton, a cordwainer, which doesn't mean that he was born in Campton, merely that he was resident there at the time of the marriage.

If the family was non-conformist it might explain why I can't see an obvious baptism for Samuel

I'm stuck! Your best bet is to purchase the marriage cert for the 1842 marriage which you can do online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ , cost £9-25, using the coordinates that JJ provided. You should then get his father's name and occupation, which hopefully will enable us to trace him.

Thank goodness for post 1837 second marriages!
