Do you have him for definite in later census years? That would give you his birthplace, which may not have been in England, Lockhart is a fairly common name in Scotland.

If they divorced in 1899 (and there is a record on ancestry of a divorce file which looks like it matches the info) then I would have thought he would be unlikely to be Joseph's father ? - the only birth record for a child of that name is in  Q4 1906, Tynemouth.

On familysearch there is a Baptism for a Thomasina Lockhart, parents Alexander and Margaret, 14 Jan 1897, but on my phone so it doesn't show me all details - just Northumberland.

I assume you don't have his marriage certificate with father's name?

There is an entry on there too for Chelsea Pension record for an Alexander Lockhart, born 1873, Northumberland. I'm sure someone can look into that for you (sorry can't at the moment!).

Also on FreeBMD, birth of Alexander Lockhart, Dec qtr 1873, Newcastle T, 10b 59.Maybe?? Or have you looked into that one?

In 1901 at that address from the divorce papers (97 Church St Walker) lives an 8 yo Alice Lockhart born in Durham, the niece of Neil McCormick b Scotland and his wife Jane b North Whitefields.

Edit
As Maureen said Alex is there too - I didn't even notice him.
