John Staples
« on: Tuesday 18 June 13 12:44 BST (UK) »
I need help finding details for John Staples.

I know from his marriage certificate in 1876 he married Jane Elizabeth Brown in Settrington, Yorkshire, his fathers name given as John Staples farm labourer.
The 1881 census shows John & Jane Staples living at Lime Cottages, North Grimston and his date of birth is recorded as 1855 birthplace Bickley, Yorks.  I have traced them through to the 1911 census still living in North Grimston and occupation is Quarryman.  Birth date and place never changes.  He is also listed in the Bulmers directory 1892 as Lime Kilns Foreman, North Grimston.

I know his wife Jane died in 1950 Ryedale district age 94 and his children are known to have stayed in the Malton area but can find no entries for John for death/burial.
I am also aware of an entry for John Staples ,  Settrington 1871 which gives right birth date but birth place London.

I am hoping someone may be able to help with baptism or be able to find a death  for John Staples.

Hi and welcome  :)

He certainly is an enigma, isn't he!

Do you have anything to go on post-1911 as to when he might have died? E.g. children's marriage certificates  - does he ever appear as a witness (so definitely alive at that point) or do any of them refer to him as deceased?

Ancestry Users have commented on his PoB in the 1881 census ...

1.
England London/Kent Bickley rather than England Yorkshire Bickley
Added additional data not found on the record.

2.
England LINCOLNSHIRE BICKER  rather than England Yorkshire Bickley
Correction due to an error in transcription.

Also ref your 1871 find - note that the first child was born in Settrington too ...

RegIndex doesnt have a Bickley in Yorkshire ... nor Kent for that matter - the only listed Bickley is in Cheshire !

There does seem to be a tiny Bickley in North Yorkshire:

Thanks AVM! wonder if near Settrington .... not that close it seems.

Only 1 Public Tree on Ancestry - and no more clues from it other than seen in the annotations for the 1881 census

There was a son Joseph who was killed in action La Somme in 1916 and there's no mention on any of the records as his  father being deceased .  All the children's marriages l have traced have been before 1911.

I am aware of the trees on Ancestry and some are relatives l am in touch with, the 1881 census did lead them to think Bickley was listed wrongly as being in Yorkshire but then what's the chances of the next three census's also being wrong.
There is also a Bickley in Bromley,London but having looked at all the John Staples couldn't find any connection there either.

Definitely a mystery!
