The copy I have is from the original marriage cert from a family bible. I havent seen the original. I am thinking it has been removed by a family. Not the first that I have found to be altered. The family does nto mention the death of William Jones

Are you saying someone has hand-copied the original and you have not seen it at all?
If so, it is a very dubious document I am sorry to say ???

Looking at a copy of the original marriage cert of daughter Mary Ann in Victoria 1869. Next to name of father William Jones, there appears to be a two words scribbled out. The first one looks like "dead". I wonder if I got a copy from BDM it would show that he was dead?

Where have you seen the image you mention above?   Are you able to scan or copy that and post to this site so others could possibly give their opinion?

Well that's a hard one.
I'm not really sure what has been blotted out.
The first capital letter seems to intrude down into the line below and looks a little like a capital "G" but not sure.  It looks like two words and I at first thought "General" was the first word and maybe "Labourer" should follow but it doesn't look like Labourer at all.   The second word maybe, could be, grasping at straws, "Unknown"?

Having a break and looking later with fresh eyes  :-\

The Grooms name is Alexander Dowd, Dairyman of Fitzroy, Victoria.
Alexander and  Mary Ann move to Tasmania.
I found a lot of newspaper articles from Tasmania, where Alexander is constantly beating and threatening to leave her. Mary Ann Attempts suicide by poisoning

Yes I found it...only JONES Mary Ann married 1869 and born Leicestershire.

JONES  Mary Ann born Leicestershire
DOWD Alexander Richard
1869  Reg#4688

I have never seen details on a marriage certificate blocked out so I suggest someone has done that.  Usually any errors are noted the margin and usually something along the lines of Column * should read *** etc etc.

I think it is possibly Wm's occupation which has been scribbled over.  G****n - possibly ??gentleman :-\ :-\.  Used to cover all sorts of situations eg unemployed, whereabouts unknown, in prison, scoundrel, deceased.  Unfortunately not all marriage certificates note the status of the parents ie if they are deceased.

I have notice that my g-grandmother Elizabeth Johnson (nee Jones) also tried to hide the death of her husband Halstien. Her Bible states that he died Launceston 1902. Infact he drowned himself in 1903.
I need to go to BDM on Monday, so I think that I might get another copy. I am hoping it says Dead. Atleast that will narrow the search.
Many Thanks
