BOUCHERs in Bampton
« on: Thursday 20 June 13 09:18 BST (UK) »
The Quarter Sessions records for Bampton in 1790 (Epiphany session) show Jno. BOUCHER having to fork out £40 for his son William (a minor) 'for a bastard at Standlake'. Which bastard was borne by Ann FITCHETT.
I would be very grateful if someone could tell me when William was born (as a minor in 1790, this would put this between 1769 and about 1774).
Were the BOUCHERs long-time residents of Bampton?

Hi duport

Here's what could be Ann Fitchett's christening from FamilySearch.org, which may help (age wise) to narrow the search for William's christening a bit.

Name:    Ann Fitchett
Gender:    Female
Christening Date:    31 Mar 1766
Christening Place:    BAMPTON,OXFORD,ENGLAND
Father's Name:    Edward Fitchett
Mother's Name:    Hannah

There are six siblings also.

Cheers for now, Bonza

Hi

I have not been able to find a baptism for William in the Bampton transcripts

There are BOUCHER/BUCHER/BUTCHERs in Bampton going back but with "gaps" into the 1500s,the earliest baptisms appear to be :-

05 May 1567-BUCHER John & Joan s & d of Peter

The earliest marriage a Sarah in 1710 but she was a widow-others 1720 Robert ? of Cowley ?
1726 Charles and 1729 Richard.

They were baptised at Bampton
18 June 1695-Boucher Robert s Thomas
24 Sept 1699-Butcher Charles s Thomas
01 May 1702-Butcher Richard s Thomas

The child was baptised at Standlake and the transcribed P/R by OFHS has this
04 Apr 1790-BOUCHER William s William & Ann Boucher......but...,the latter Boucher has a line through it and FITCHETT written in hand !!

Makes one wonder if there was an illicit marriage somewhere !!
