Alderman
« on: Thursday 20 June 13 20:11 BST (UK) »
I've just found out that one of my relatives was an Alderman. His entry in the burial register says so. But unsure as to exactly what it entails. Google doesn't show up anything useful when I do a search for him and use the word Alderman.

Does anybody know if it was an important job as his will stated that he was a Perwigg maker. Just wondering what records might be available for family history.

Thank you.

So he was someone of some importance locally then?

Hi,

I would expect so.  If you contact the relevant local/county archives there might be more information available. I'm assuming this was in England/Wales.

Hi Nanny Jan,

Ive spent all day at my local RO, but didn't make the discovery until quite late on! Yes, he was as Alderman in Swansea. Strange how a google search doesnt come up with anything! His name was James Thomas and he died 1781. His will is online and here:

I wonder why google isn't that helpful?

Hi,

Unfortunately not all records are available online but an email to the RO might confirm if they hold anything useful.  It could mean a return visit for you.
