Hoylake Hydro Laundry
« on: Sunday 23 June 13 08:51 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can throw some light on this one for me.

On the 1911 census I have a few members of the Sherlock family working at the Hydro Laundry in Hoylake and was wondering if this would be the same laundry that previously occupied the buildings of Heap & Partners behind Manor Road train station.  Does anyone have any idea how I can get more information regarding this laundry?

The men of this family were previously all fishermen.

Thanks for any help with this.

Best wishes
Lyn

I am wondering if "hydro" was T J Sherlock's job, rather than the name of the laundry he worked at. A hydro operator perhaps.

My 1911 Gore's directory lists a Hoylake Steam Laundry at Lee Road, Great Meols. In 1914 that's listed at Newton Road.

"Hydro man" and "Hydro woman" do seem to feature as laundry jobs in situations vacant ads of that era

Thanks for the links Shaun - much appreciated.  This at least confirms that the steam laundry was where Heap & Partners used to be and in existence at the right time I was looking at.

The family were living in Groveland Avenue so in close proximity to Newton/Lee Road where the laundry was located.

Tried searching for Hydro as a job but have not come up with anything useful.

Hydro was the name for a very large spin dryer.
