Luke Family Coneysthorpe 1836-1855
« on: Sunday 23 June 13 10:38 BST (UK) »
Hi to all being my first posting I hope you will excuse any mistakes.

I am researching my family tree and done not too bad so far but coming a bit unstuck in one area.

If I can list so far what I have found out:

John Luke b Scotland assume 1807 M Eliza Smith 1836 Malton

Children:Wallace Luke b 1841, Mary Ella Luke b 1839, John Luke b 1845, David Smith Luke b 1846
Horatio Luke b 1848, Alexander Luke b 1853. All born in Coneysthorpe.

I have the 1841 Census which I am ok on.

John Luke Farther was a Forester ( I am assuming Castle Howard)

John Luke (Son) is who I am trying to follow he at the age of 16 (I believe) went to Castle Howard as a Gardener / Journeyman 1861 Census for Henderskelfe Parish in lodgings with George Sutherland (Master Gardener) again suspect Castle Howard.

I can not see or get details if John Luke (son) continues on at Castle Howard in further Censuses or get married etc. This is my area of interest.

If any details of the children can be obtained that would be a bonus. I am related to Wallace Luke which is a son of John Luke (Father) so I am ok on that person.

Many thanks if I can have some info.

Clive

I have the 1841 Census which I am ok on.

John Luke Father was a Forester ( I am assuming Castle Howard)

John Luke (Son) is who I am trying to follow he at the age of 16 (I believe) went to Castle Howard as a Gardener / Journeyman

1861 Census for Henderskelfe Parish in lodgings with George Sutherland (Master Gardener) again suspect Castle Howard.

Where does  the John Luke b1815 lodging with George Sutherland fit in with your Luke family?

1861 census RG 9; Piece: 3628; Folio: 22; Page: 4

John Luke  age 46 born c1815 Coneythorpe  Single apprentice dittoed as journeyman/gardener

Amended

John's age appears to be 16 so born c 1845

Thank You all for such a fast and helpful replies.

Ladyhawk the only bit I do not understand is the Begining of your mail. RG10 1845 John Luke Boarder in 1845 John Luke (son) was born in 1845 and John Luke (farther) was Forester.

Then you go on too Siblings of which John Luke (father)(died 1856) was married to Eliza Smith but not on your details I see a Mary Smith widow of 86 which could be Eliza's mother.

Thank You all

John Luke (father)(died 1856) was married to Eliza Smith
but not on your details I see a Mary Smith widow of 86 which could be Eliza's mother.

Elizabeth probably moved in with her mother when she became widowed 1856
 - her mother is noted as blind on the 1861 census

Mary SMITH widow 86 Henderskelf
Elizabeth LUKE dau widow  46
Mary Luke gd/gau 22

here's her mother Mary on 1851 census

Ladyhawk,

Understand all now. Many thanks for your help.
It appears that the ship Ada was lost in 1877.
How do you find out if he did?

Thanks for all your help.
