McDevitts in Londonderry, Ireland
« on: Sunday 30 June 13 16:40 BST (UK) »
I am researching a line of my ancestry - McDevitt.  I believe my McDevitts came from Londonderry Ireland.  My great-great-great grandmother was Sarah McDevitt, born about 1826 who came over to the United States with her family in the late 1840s or so.  Her parents were Daniel McDevitt and Catherine Dever (Daver?), siblings include: James (born @ 1820); Rosanna (born @ 1822); Dennis (born @ 1825); Daniel (born @ 1828); William (born @ 1833); Ellen (born @ 1838) and possible an Edward (born @ 1837).  Of course, there may be more siblings but that is undetermined as of now.  My McDevitts settled in Newark, New Jersey.  I have also come across numerous records for other (possibly) related McDevitts in the Newark area, arriving between the mid 1830s to the mid 1870s.  I have also obtained a will for a Edward McDevitt, from Ireland, who lived in Newark, but then returned to Ireland due to illness.  He died there, but as his wife remained in Newark, the will was processed there.  He was from The Barracks, Waterside, Prehen, Glendermott - if the writing is being made out correctly.  If anyone is researching along these lines, let me know.  I'd appreciate hearing from you.
