Photos of the Chapel area of Southampton 1910-1940??

I wonder if any one has any early photos of the houses in ENDLE ST or DOCK ST in the Chapel area of Southampton, I have photos of all the houses I have lived in in my 80 yrs, including the house I was born in in ALBERT RD, but I cannot find any of the streets that my Mother and Father were brought up in, and would dearly loved copies, if they could be spared, these streets were demolished in the mid 1940's and the families dispersed around Southampton.

 I use the Port Cities/Southampton website extensively in my research as there are all sorts of images of the various streets and roads around Chapel and with the street directories ranging from 1811 -1970, all on line, I have managed to track a wide range of family members through the ages but alas the photos I would like are not among them, so if anyone has such images would it be possible to let me have jpgs of them, please??

Have you sent an enquiry to Southampton City Archives?  I would expect them to have some image collections.

Hi Bowman,

I too was born in Albert Road, Southampton and had relatives in Dock Street and Ryde Terrace etc - mainly Scott and Cotton families. I've also come across the Port Cities photos and the Street Directories that have have helped me make quite a database over the years - but as you say, photos are a bit rare. It seems there was only photographic interest in our neighbourhood if there was some kind of incident. I do have lots of OS maps over most of the period when Chapel existed.

Hi Dave,
           I feel that photographs, and even maps, can add a lot to family history, it gives you a chance to get a feel for life in the 'good old days', my memories goes back to just about 1936 through till my teenage years late 40's.
           Back in August I managed to find and buy a couple of books relating to Southampton during those times, 'the unofficial story of the Southampton Blitz' and 'Southampton's Children of the Blitz' and I found photos of Dock street and Endle St in them, plus many of the various areas around, there is another that I am looking for, I cannot recall the title at the moment, but it is about the children of Chapel, I will be going back to the same bookshop in Hedge End for another good look round in the hope I can find a copy.

I've got a copy of that book titled "Chapel and Northam" by Sheila Jemima - also I have "Southampton's Inns and Taverns" by the late Tony Gallaher, both have some interesting photos that I could scan for you if need be. Let me know.

That is the one, 'Chapel and Northam' before you can PM ( private message) me you have to have three posts online, I see that you have 2 at the moment, answer this one then I will PM you, I now live in Somerset so only get up to So'ton now and again, but will be there before Christmas, so will look out for a copy.
       In the 'Southampton Inns and Taverns' I don't suppose there is a photo of 'The Garibaldi' that was at the top of Endle St and was bombed out, it was my Dads local as a teenager.

Hi Bowman my parents lived in Dock St & Endle St until they were bombed out in the Blitz. They sadly passed away in 2001 & 2002, my dad Alfie Jenman was a keen historian and always had fond memories and lots tales of his years living in the area. My mothers family were the Wilsons and her father  was "Tug " Fred Wilson. I would love to see any photos you may have and would be interested to know if you recall the families, I think my dad's nickname was "Sarge". Kind Regard Lynn
