Skoosh was kind enough to provide the following information on a different thread (Re: Alexr McDonald m Chr Robertson in Blair Atholl, Thursday 27 December 2012)

    Quote

A wee bit of scandal from Dalnamein.  "A petition was lodged in 1776 by Alexander McDonald, Edinburgh on behalf of his nephews Alex & James & niece Isobel in Dalnamein. McDonald's brother, father of the children, had died recently and the widow Janet Gow had re-married a few weeks later to a much younger man and was planning to throw the children destitute". The petitioner applied to the estate to take over the farm on behalf of the "poor fatherless babes" in order to take care of them.
Possibly no relation at all but interesting nevertheless. The factor Mr James Small was unimpressed and obviously wasn't born yesterday.
This wee epistle from "Life in the Atholl Glens" by John Kerr.

There appears to be no evidence for this in the Blair Atholl OPR, but this shows how much is missed by the IGI database when alias names are not included......

Alexander's brother was John McDonald, alias Mannoch.

John McDonald, alias Mannoch, in Dalnamine and Janet Gow in Dalnamine, married 18th October 1768
John Mannoch and Janet Gow in Dalnamine, a son Alexander, born 22nd November 1769
John McDonald and Janet Gow in Dalnamine, a son James, born 4th March 1772

Janet Gow in Riechaile (next to Dalnamine) married Samuel McColl in Riechaile, 13th June 1776.

After this Samuel Coll is recorded as Samuel McCulloch.

Samuel McCulloch and Janet Gow had three children (Elspeth, born 12th December 1777; John, born 6th March 1780; and Duncan, born 13th August 1781.

He then started to call himself Samuel Stewart.

Samuel Stewart and Janet Gow had a further two children (John, born 19th October 1784; and Janet, born 30th May 1787).

Janet Gow died and Samuel Stewart alias McCulloch in Dalnamine married Katharine Robertson from Blairfettie on 14th December 1794.

Samuel Stewart, or McCulloch, and Katharine Robertson had two children (Alexander, born 13th July 1796; and Girsel, born 22nd May 1798.

Doesn't make things easy!
