Hello,
Catherine Whelan (or Phelan) born Kilkeny 1790, married Patrick Glispin around 1806 at Kilkenny. They eventually left (Gowran) for the cotton mills of Leeds and then onto Massachusetts around early 1840s.
Reading the Ancestry family trees associated with this couple and their subsequent offspring, all give her the surname as Whelan. I cannot seem to locate anywhere that her maiden name was Whelan. I wonder where they got her name from and indeed her year of birth?
I have located a marriage record dated 29 Nov 1804 for Clara parish, Kilkenny - which up until around 1809 was part of the Gowran parish - between Patrick Glispin and Catherine PHELAN. No parents recorded.
The surnames Phelan and Whelan are found particularly in Waterford and Kilkenny. The Phelan, along with Whelan, originate from the Irish surname which comes from 'wolf' and the pronunciation for both is Feelan although in some parts of Kilkenny they are both Feelan and Waylan.
Can anyone help me sort this out and confirm which one is her surname and the year she married Patrick Glispin - please?
Thank you
James
