Catherine Glispin (Whelan or Phelan?)
« on: Sunday 07 July 13 23:29 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Catherine Whelan (or Phelan) born Kilkeny 1790, married Patrick Glispin around 1806 at Kilkenny. They eventually left (Gowran) for the cotton mills of Leeds and then onto Massachusetts around early 1840s.

Reading the Ancestry family trees associated with this couple and their subsequent offspring, all give her the surname as Whelan. I cannot seem to locate anywhere that her maiden name was Whelan. I wonder where they got her name from and indeed her year of birth?

I have located a marriage record dated 29 Nov 1804 for Clara parish, Kilkenny - which up until around 1809 was part of the Gowran parish - between Patrick Glispin and Catherine PHELAN. No parents recorded.

The surnames Phelan and Whelan are found particularly in Waterford and Kilkenny. The Phelan,  along with Whelan, originate from the Irish surname which comes from 'wolf' and the pronunciation for both is Feelan although in some parts of Kilkenny they are both Feelan and Waylan.

Can anyone help me sort this out and confirm which one is her surname and the year she married Patrick Glispin - please?

Thank you

James
Queensland.

Hi,

Could have been a source for the surname - The death of Ann McGuiness 16 Jan 1902  (born 1820 -aged 82 years) gave father Patrick Glispen (transcribed Glespen on anc) and Mother Catherine Whalan

Death info on James didn't help : Catherine Farlan  ???

Could this be a marriage of Michael William Glispin (born 1827)  ??? Which gives mother Catherine Whelan

Thank you, Sandra. It could well be both depending on who was recording her name. So we cannot be absolutely sure.
Date of birth for Catherine might have been earlier. 1850 US Fed census and 1841 English census record her ages differently.

Thanks again
James
