Howe Green
« on: Monday 08 July 13 08:14 BST (UK) »

Can anyone help with the enumeration district which Howe Green would come under please?

I don't mind trawling the census page by page if I know where to look.  I have a William Sturgeon who seems to be at The Farm House, Howe Green in both 1848 and 1853.  This info from adverts in the Herts Mercury but I can't find him by the usual routes in census  ???

Many thanks
Suey

I thought it was Essex - near Great Waltham. But perhaps I am thinking of something else!

What else can you tell us about him? Do you know an age/birthplace/family members?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi liz, hmmm I do get confused with the boundarys but I'm fairly certain it's Herts.  Looking at the map it's within walking distance of Bengeo Street which is Hertford.

As for William ?  thats the question, I'm not sure, he should be the William born c1788.  But he's a proper mystery, born Thaxted, marriage to a Hannah Ackow in 1807. Daughter Mary Ann baptised 1807 Thaxted...then nothing.

He has nephews Robert b1825, James b1827 and William b1821 (it's not this one as he's found 1851/61 in London)  Any Sturgeon's in the general area are all related somehow.

Howe Green Manor is SW of Hertford, SE of Welwyn Garden City, just south of the B158, and between Longacre Wood and Spring Wood.

Hi

How(e) Green, 1851? Essex, Great Hallingbury (book 4)

First dwelling would seem to be

William Fowler 72 Farmer, Margretting
Thomas 40 Hallingbury
George 29 Hallingbury
June (Jane?) Reynolds 28? Housekeeper, Hatfield Broad Oak

Just done a bit of searching - sorry it was Howe Street I was thinking of, a hamlet within Great Waltham parish. Comes under Great Waltham enumeration district 3b.
So, not Howe Green.

If I hadn't seen Williams name in print I'd have thought he didn't exist!  Some of the enumerators walk descriptions don't help either, ie 'Starting at Mr Jones house, via Mrs Smith ending with Mr Brown on the corner'  very helpful, not ;D

Thanks for looking folks...

Can you here me shouting  ;D   I've found him!  Taken me all day but I've just confirmed via seax that he's William Sturgeon baptised (and bless him he gave his correct pob in 1861) 1809 Stanstead Mountfitchet and is one of my family

He's been there all the time but moved around from census to census, not far but enough for me not to connect him.

Thanks for all your help everyone!
