Coutts/Perkis/Perkiss - Ohio, USA + Isle of Wight, Hampshire, UK
« on: Monday 15 July 13 15:47 BST (UK) »
Hello Forum,

Looking for links to this line:

Frances Lena Coutts
b. 15/10/1894, Ryde, Isle of Wight, England
d. 18/8/1957, Dayton, Ohio, USA - aged 63

Coutts was her married name.  She married Frederick L. Coutts - date & place unknown.

I think she is Frances Lina Perkis, christened 1894 at All Saints, Ryde, Isle of Wight, daughter of Rowland and Angelina Perkis.

Rowland Roger Perkis (b. 1869), son of Harry Perkis, married Angelina Hawkins (b. 1868), daughter of Jonathan Hawkins, on 28/10/1889 at Shanklin, Isle of Wight.

Rowland is on the 1911 census England & Wales.  Birthplace:  Ryde, Isle of Wight, Hampshire.

Rowland Perkis or Perkiss & Angelina Hawkins had at least 7 children:
1- Percy Rowland Perkis, christened 1890, All Saints, Ryde, Isle of Wight
2- Frances Lina Perkis, christened 1894, All Saints, Ryde, Isle of Wight
3- Kathleen Constance Perkis, christened 1898, All Saints, Ryde, Isle of Wight
4- Harold Gascoigne Perkis, christened 1901, All Saints, Ryde, Isle of Wight
5- Emily Perkis, christened 1903, All Saints, Ryde, Isle of Wight
6- Joshua Edward Perkis, christend 1905, All Saints, Ryde, Isle of Wight
7- Ethel Angelina Perkiss, christened 1908, All Saints, Ryde, Isle of Wight

Frances Lina or Lena Perkis is on the 1901 census England & Wales.  She travelled to New York in 1926 on board the Mauretania, sailing from Southampton, aged 31 on the record, unmarried, a housekeeper, British citizen.  Last permanent residence:  Chicago, USA.   ???

My interest is in the Frederick Coutts marriage, which I cannot find.

My Coutts line has Ryde, Isle of Wight links from about 1937.

A 1947 passenger list has Frances sailing from England to New York.  Her final destination was Detroit, Michigan.  Her brother Frank Perkis was at Rocky Fork Club, Gahanna, Ohio.  It says she was in the US from 1921-1945 and was at 3747 Scouel, Detroit.

It looks like Frederick was Frederick Leslie Coutts born Newhills, Aberdeenshire.  He was single when he sailed to Canada in 1923 and when he crossed the US/Canada border in May, 1924.  A 1927 passenger list from Liverpool to Quebec also has him single and previously living in Windsor, Ontario from 1923-1927.

Possible Social Security Death Index entry for Frederick:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V9SW-5MP

I don't see an entry for Frances on the Ohio death index for the date you mention.  There is a Frankie L. Coutts who died 10 Aug. 1957 in Hardin Co., Ohio.

Thank you very much, Shelly.  That's very helpful indeed.

So Frederick and Frances must have met and married after 1932, if they were married, but where?  Detroit, Chicago, or Ohio?  I can't find the marriage register.  Frances would have been in her late 30s/early 40s.  Probably no children.

Does the 1947 passenger list give her marital status?  Is her name on it Coutts or Perkis?

I found the Isle of Wight birth register for Frank Purkiss, son of Roland and Angelina Purkiss.  Frank was the second eldest, christened 2/10/1892 at All Saints, Ryde, Isle of Wight.

He's on the 1930 US Census at Chicago with wife Eileen (born in Ireland), children Eileen, 11, and Rodger, 8, both born in Illinois.  Frank's unmarried sister Frances is with them, aged 34.  Frank emigrated to the US in 1914, arriving on board the Olympic from Southampton, aged 22.  Probably trying to escape the war in Europe, I imagine, but he was drafted into the US army at Cook County, Illinois, 1917.

Frances's death register is on https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XT8P-KZ6.  Isn't it rather curious that husband Frederick died on 10th August, 1957 and Frances died exactly 8 days later?   :o  Frederick Coutts was 87, if it's the right Frederick, so not surprising, but Frances was only 63.  I'm wondering what the cause of death was.

Thank you for all your help looking things up, Shelley.  Much appreciated.   :)

Possible Social Security Death Index entry for Frederick:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V9SW-5MP

The SSDI record for Frederick Coutts might indicate he died in the UK.

and a sister Isabella Coutts who married Percival Clarence Gould.

Isabella Ann Coutts 1889 in Newhills, Aberdeenshire, Scotland  died 14th July 1955 in  Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio. (Isabella immigrated in 1912 going to a cousin Mr Gould.

Thanks, Sandra!  I don't know where I got 10/8/1957 from; I must have been looking at somebody else!  I've just checked Scotland's People, and the death record is there, but the document has not been uploaded, unfortunately.

1982   COUTTS   FREDERICK LESLI   Not Permissible    M   87   ABERDEEN   ABERDEEN CITY   304/00 0540   No Image

Mother's surname not permissible?   ???  Why not?

I looked for his birth cert too, but no matches anywhere in Scotland.  Curious.

There's a Fred Coutts on the 1930 US Census, aged 33 born in Scotland, lodging at River Rouge, Wayne, Michigan.  Head of house:  Elizabeth Mclachtan, 63, born in Canada.  There's another lodger with them, Charles B Willett, also 33, born Illinois.

No birth cert found for Harry M. Coutts circa 1900 on SP either.   I can see that he crossed the border from Canada to the US in 1924.  Departure contact name:  wife, Bertha.  Arrival contact name:  sister, Florence Gin.  ???  There's an earlier crossing as well, 1917.  Departure contact:  father, James.  Arrival contact:  brother, James.

This story is getting very interesting!

Fredrick's Mother was Ann Tough born 11 May 1857 in Scotland  and died 30 Nov 1895 in Scotland.
Father remarried to Elizabeth Mitchell who is on the 1901 Census Echt, Aberdeenshire.

Be careful there were 2 Harry Coutts. The one with the father James and wife Bertha is not yours.
Yours was married to Sheila Milne. Could be Harry Moir Coutts landed Boston 20 March 1925 on the Baltic - occupation gardener.

Sheile E Coutts - 3 Oct 1906 Died 9 Jul 1990 Plymouth Massachusetts.

Barnstable, Barnstable, Massachusetts 1940

Harry Coutts 39 and Sheilia Coutts 33
Son Coutts 7 (named after his grandfather)
Son Coutts 2

Another sister of Frederick's -  Alice Gordon Coutts Remnant - Born 18 Oct 1891 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland  and died 15 Jan 1974 in  Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio.
