looking for a Butler from Leyton.... Cleminson/Butler
« on: Tuesday 16 July 13 15:42 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Ok, the story so far... I have found a 15 year old listed as stepson living with the Clemenson family in1891 living in Goodall St Leyton/walthamstow.

This is where the trial goes cold. Edward Butler was 15 years old here and an apprentice. His dad "might" be Edward as well as this seems to be a recurring pattern. His Mum is Mary Ann who was born 1853 also in Leyton.

Now at some point before 1881 (when mary ann remarried Edward Cleminson) Edward? Butler senior is killed in an accident.

In the 1881 census Mary and Edward Cleminson are seen but Edward, her son is not with them. He should be aged about five so should be there.

So then, i am looking for five year old Edward, who he is with, as i am guessing its a relative, and hopefully some evidence for who dad was.

Tall order i know....

Cheers, Mike :)

Get a Birth Cert, or if you his Mum's Maiden - search for a Butler Marriage ?

Ah - I see the problem !

OK, a Birth Cert for a Cleminson child should show her previous names leading to an original Butler marriage perhaps ...

Births Dec 1881

CLEMINSON,  Hannah Bessie    W. Ham  4a 38

Does young Edward ever marry and that would hopefully show father's name ?

He does marry, fortunatly....

I don't have certs for his family so far, and there are a lot of similar names. Don't know what her maiden name was before being a Butler. Not yet anyway.

His fathers name is likely to be Edward, possibly Edward William as this seems to have been passed down the male line, so would make sense. I would guesstimate the marriage as 1875.

But at present i am struggling to either find a marriage, or indeed a cencus with them as a couple or a 5 year old Edward.

theres a good chance they missed the 1871 census marrying maybe in early to mid 1870s .... then the death & remarriage

take the guesswork out of it - you really need that maiden name, as Edward doesnt have a Birth Index entry that I can see ..
