Mary Waters
« on: Tuesday 16 July 13 19:43 BST (UK) »
Trying to find information on Mary Waters (Jones).Think she was born in Ireland, married Philip Jones and gave birth to my mother Lilian Giffard in 1921.  I think Mary may have died around 1933/34.  She lived in Wales with Philip in the Pontlottyn/Bargoed area in Mid Glamorgan.

Welcome to Rootschat!  ;D

your mother's birth looks to have been registered in the Merthyr Tydfil registration district. There is a possible for her parents' marriage registration in a neighbouring registration district in Monmouthshire

Phillip Jones dec qtr 1909 Bedwellty vol 11a pg 243 with Mary Waters one of the 2 females on the same page.

Have you tried looking for Phillip & Mary on the 1911 census? Because of copyright issues, we can't look them up for you. Their entry should give where she was born and the marriage certificate should give her father's name & occupation.

Thank you, I have now found that she was born in Caum, Cork.  Not sure how I might be able to find her family as I understand that there are only two Irish census 1901 and 1911. I think that Philip Jones must have been stationed in Ireland during the early 1900's and they must have come back as a family.
Any suggestions please on the best way forward.
Mike

they married in Monmouthshire, ref given in previous post, so you could get the marriage cert from the GRO

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

This would give you the name & occupation of her father and one of the 2 witnesses may be a relative.

Have you checked for earlier census entries for Philip and Mary when they were single. It's possible Mary had moved with family when she was younger. Using the info from the marriage cert and the places of birth from the 1911 census should help you find Philip in earlier years and possibly Mary.

There's a Mary Waters in Caum, Co. Cork in 1901 aged 13 living with family but unfortunately father is already dead so you won't be able to compare his name in census with the details on her marriage certificate.

However, she's still there in 1911 and single (which shows how easy it is to take one fact and jump to the wrong conclusion)-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

You do need the marriage cert, but to help find them in a census there is a family tree online that appears to have the same family.

It lists Mary Waters born 1889 Cork and Phillip Jones born 1887 Tredegar Monmouthshire, with three children  including Benjamin Jones born 15 Sept 1909 in Rhymney, in Monmouthshire

No guarantee that this is the right family (or that the information is accurate), but it may be worth checking out the Welsh 1911 census

Good luck Mike and I hope the person replies.  Come back if you are struck. It is the Jones family tree
