1891 census lookup / Radnorshire / Burgess
« on: Sunday 12 June 05 21:14 BST (UK) »
Seeking any info on the Burgess' that show up in the 1881 &  1891 Radnorshire census.

James (b. approx 1827) & Eliza Burgess both born in Shrops and their children who were all born in Knighton:

John       b. 1848/49,
James    b. 1850/51,
Mary A    b. 1855/56,
Charles   b. 1859,  (my direct line) and married in Knighton in 1881 to Ellen/Eleanor Minton
Elizabeth b. 1862/63,
William     b. 1863/64,
Jessey (dau)  b. 1870/71

Would like to learn more not only about Charles, but his siblings as well.  Charles came to the US somewhere during this time, and had additional children in the US. Don't know if his sibs stayed behind or not.

Also, if an address was listed in an earlier census as Cwm, Knighton, Radnorshire, what does the Cwm mean?

Thanks in advance.  Really appreciate the help I have been getting on this list!

Cwm is the Welsh word for 'valley'. But is also often used in place names where there is a valley.
Pugh - Dolgellau, Llanfihangel y Pennant MER
Jones - Llandybie, Llandeilo
Evans - Llanboidy, Llanwinio, Trecynon
Watkins - Hirwaun, Merthyr Tydfil, Pontypool
Rowlands - Caernarfon, Llanllyfni
Morris - Llanegryn, Llanllyfni
Jones - Llanllyfni, Clynnog
Thomas - Llanllyfni, Caernarfon

Hi
The Wales  1881 census is free to look at on Ancestry.com. You get to see a picture of the actual census page as well.

"Cwm" is a district of Knighton.
