Aquilla Pollard 1846-?
« on: Thursday 25 July 13 12:45 BST (UK) »
Hello, I have been researching my family tree for many, many years but one of the brick walls is the death of my 2x Gt Grandfather, Aquilla (various spellings from different records) Pollard, born 2 June 1846, Victoria Street, Silsbridge Lane, Bradford. I have him on all the census, 1851, 1861, 1871, his marriage to Selina Marshall in 1873, even his trial in Dec 1868 (where he was acquitted) the last record I can find of him is 7 April 1877 where he was present at his Mothers death (Mary Ackroyd) 10 Westend Lane, Bradford.
He had 3 children only 1(my Gt Grandfather Richard Pollard) survived to adulthood, Richard was living with an aunt on the 1881 census, so I am assuming that Aquilla died, left? sometime after 1877, any advice would be most welcome.

his marriage to Selina Marshall in 1873

Hi there

Just to get the factual background - the marriage was in fact 1869 I think?. Did Selina then die aged 24 in Dec qtr 1873, perhaps connected with the birth/death that quarter of an infant Selina Pollard?

Did Richard give details of his father when he married?

I have Richards original marriage cert from 1892 and the father is named as Richard but for some reason he and Selina Eccles (another Selina) married in Burnley, Lancashire, they didn't stay there as they lived all their lives in Bradford.
Richard died in 1933 and I have the details of the people also buried in the grave and it gives their parents names, Richards parents are named as Aquilla and Selina Pollard, so I am not sure why the fathers name was Richard on the marriage cert, unless they eloped to Burnley......

so I am not sure why the fathers name was Richard on the marriage cert, unless they eloped to Burnley......

One reason for the father's name being incorrect on the marriage certificate might be if Richard had grown up not knowing his father beyond his early childhood, and just made up a father's name for respectability purposes.

I must say I can't easily see what happened to Aquilla but if he'd got in with a bad crowd (viz the criminal proceedings in 1868, albeit that there was an acquittal) perhaps he decided, or needed, to make a fresh start elsewhere under a different name.

Although his fathers name is on the burial records, so the family must have known of him, I guess its one brick wall that's not coming down anytime soon.
Thank you for your help though.

Yes, the burial is curious.  Where did it take place - might there have been local knowledge of the family? Was anybody from an earlier generation buried in the grave?

He was buried in Bowling cemetery, my Grandad kept lots of old papers, thank goodness, so I knew exactly which grave he was buried in. Sadly he was the oldest occupant!! i even have the funeral expenses from 1933.
