Hi to all on Mayo forum.
Just wanted to let you all know about a new website with some information
on assisted emigration in the years 1883/1884 from the North Mayo area.
A commemoration has just taken place in Mayo to mark the 130th Anniversary
of the first sailing from Blacksod Bay to America & Canada.
This assisted emigration was arranged by a man named James Tuke, a quaker.
This was initiated in an attempt to address starvation in the West of Ireland.
It assisted 3,000 people from Achill, Erris and Belmullet areas of Mayo in the first
year. A year or so late it helped a further 500 most of whom were relations of the
first group.
The ships departed from Blacksod Bay.
The ships' manifest is available to view on
www.blacksodbayemigrants.ie In some cases it gives the townland area where the emigrants came from so this
would be very helpful in trying to find out where exactly your ancestors may have
originated.
Good luck with your searches, hope this is some help.
