Hi to all on Mayo forum.

Just wanted to let you all know about a new website with some information
on assisted emigration in the years 1883/1884 from the North Mayo area.

A commemoration has just taken place in Mayo to mark the 130th Anniversary
of the first sailing from Blacksod Bay to America & Canada.

This assisted emigration was arranged by a man named James Tuke, a quaker.
This was initiated in an attempt to address starvation in the West of Ireland.

It assisted 3,000 people from  Achill, Erris and Belmullet areas of Mayo in the first
year.  A year or so late it helped a further 500 most of whom were relations of the
first group.

The ships departed from Blacksod Bay.

The ships' manifest is available to view on
www.blacksodbayemigrants.ie

In some cases it gives the townland area where the emigrants came from so this
would be very helpful in trying to find out where exactly your ancestors may have
originated.

Good luck with your searches, hope this is some help.

Thanks for this Celtic Liberty. It looks really useful and hopefully it will be noted in the Mayo resources.
I have close connections to the area  :)

Hi Heywood,

You are very welcome.  I came across a very interesting item on the Irish news on TV last week, a
fair amount of time was devoted to it.   I recorded it and took down the details as I felt it would surely help some
of my rootchatter friends.......

Hope you find something useful.    It is a good site, although it looked quite simple at first.
I thought the real benefit was that some of the records mentioned the townlands  which could
be a huge help to anyone searching in that particular area.

Yes, I noticed the townlands which hopefully will be a great help. Our townland isn't mentioned but that is no problem. It's just lovely to see it. It's a fabulous area.

The link doesn't seem to work for me now  ???  You may want to check it out.

It is mentioned when I go to Ionad Deirbhile Centre and blog but I don't think it is the same format you had the other day.

Yeah, I tried it too and it seemed to have disappeared.   I tried a second time and was lucky
up it came again.

http://www.blacksodbayemigration.ie/search/?q=o+connor  just put in  a sample surname

Hope it works for everybody again.  It would be a pity if there was a problem with it.

Lyn thanks for your reply too.
