Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Akron Ohio
« on: Sunday 28 July 13 15:35 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have traced a relative Ernest Reeves who lived in CAM in Gloucestershire, England around 1900

On researching him, I have learnt that he made several trips to USA and for periods of time worked at GYTR Akron. Both him and his wife spent time in Akron and they had a son born there.

CAM, Dursley had fabric mills and also Engineering companies around this time.

Does anybody know if there was particular companies in England that employees moved to GYTR.

Looking briefly at the history of GYTR this would have been very Early in the companies life and would have been the original factory

Thanks

Colin

In case you have not seen this, Ernest's application for US citizenship can be seen at

Welcome to Rootschat..

Thank you for this link, I had not seen this document before, but I did know that Ernest and his family stayed in the USA for some time.

I have a copy of (what I think is a US Army draft) from WW1 for Ernest, and was curious why an Englishman would be drafted (is that the same as called up?)
It mentions `BAD FINGER' on that as well.

Interesting to see on his citizenship request, he came to USA from Canada.

I will look in to his journey a bit deeper.

I have documents showing him arriving in Ellis Island New York a couple of times, but nothing for Canada yet?

Thank you

Colin

What you have found is a WWI draft registration card.  Every man of a certain age had to register for the draft, including aliens residing in the US, but it doesn't mean they were actually drafted or called up.

"It should be noted that aliens were required to register but were not subject to induction into the American military."

Colin,

A little more research found a manifest of arrivals in the US from Canada. Shows Ernest crossing the border at Black Rock NY by train, C.P. (Canadian Pacific) "Atlantic" on 2 OCT 1908, going to join friend John McDonald of 199 Water St Akron Ohio. Coming from Pembroke, Canada. Also has notes that he arrived in Canada at "St John" on the "Empress of Ireland" on 24 APR  1908.

Your post caught my interest because I once lived in Akron (1944-1961) and several family worked for Goodyear T&R . My UK interest is in the HURT family line from Derbyshire area. A many times grandfather came to the colonies in 1630.

Thank you for this extra information, with your help and the information I already have to hand I am building up quite an interesting story about Ernest.

I have had a little look into the early history of GYTR in AKRON and I assume that Ernest was involved from the very early days.

Do you think that GYTR might have an Archive section that may have some details of their staff from this period?

This Ernest is not a direct relative of mine, but my family line goes back to Cam and the story came to lite and sparked my interest.
