Hello.
A tip for those researching interments in the Hamilton East and the Hamilton West Cemeteries. For a considerable time now the Waikato Times, has devoted one page in its Monday edition, to the history of the area.
Tim O’CONNOR, a local historian, writes about the early Maori, the arrival of the Europeans, the Maori wars, Waikato Militia and the progressive settlement of same.
Ann McEWAN, a Heritage consultant, takes a peak behind the facades of the region’s historical structures.
Lyn WILLIAMS, a local genealogist and historian, looks into the history of the people who’s names appear on the monumental inscriptions (headstones etc). Usually with a photo, and some 40 to 50 column centimetres of copy. Photo of todays article subject, Samuel FOULSHAM, attached.
At the start, the times published a contact email for each contributor, but I see in today’s paper that is not the case, but the Times contact is :-
editor waikatotimes co nz [fill the gaps]
Could be worth a follow up, if you have reason to believe your ancestor was a person of note, in their time, in this region.
Also note, that just inside the gate to the Hamilton West (Whitiora) Cemetery is a plot plan with named [where known] internments.
